Today we had to do something we never like to do—we had to shave one of the Great Pyrenees in our rescue program.

His coat had become so severely matted that brushing it out would have meant hours of discomfort and stress. Shaving was the kindest and most humane option for him.

In fact, our adoption agreement specifically prohibits shaving our adopted dogs because, with proper grooming, it should never be necessary. Unfortunately, with the number of dogs currently in our care and the limited number of volunteers, we simply cannot provide the regular brushing, ear checks, and nail trims that every dog deserves. Our long-term residents receive plenty of walks and lots of love, but grooming often falls behind unless they are living in a foster home.

This is why foster homes are so important. Foster families not only help keep our dogs healthy and well-groomed, but they also learn each dog's personality, habits, and needs. That information makes a tremendous difference in finding the right forever home.

If fostering isn't possible for you, perhaps you could help in another way. Can you spare an hour to brush a dog? Even occasional grooming sessions make an incredible difference in their comfort, health, and well-being.

We need volunteers who are willing to help with grooming, and every brush stroke truly matters.

To those of you who already come out and brush our dogs whenever you can—thank you. Your kindness and dedication make a real difference, and we are so grateful for everything you do.

If you'd like to volunteer, we have a training session open house this Sunday, August 9th from 1- 3 pm. Once you have completed a short training, you can come anytime during kennel hours to work with the dogs.

Sheila & Charlie - Females - Pyr Anatolians - New to Rescue- Foster Needed

Sheila and Charlie are 3 year old female littermates who are truly a bonded pair. They were surrendered to a shelter when their owner received sad news that they were diagnosed with a terminal illness. The girls were separated at the shelter due to space issues, and transported to us on different days. They had not seen each other for almost a week. Both were very sad and shut down without the other. When they were reunited, it was so heartwarming. Sheila, the larger tan girl was crying when she saw her sister again. Charlie went from being scared and sad, to wagging her tail, and they had a wonderful reunion running the yard together. We don't know if the girls were inside or outside dogs, but they keep a very clean kennel. They will only be rehomed together. They are fine with other dogs, and good with kids. Unproven with cats. Remi - Great Pyrenees Mix - Foster Needed's Story

Remi is a five year old Great Pyrenees mix who finds herself needing a home through no fault of her own. Her owners divorced and one of them kept Remi, but had to stay in a hotel in order to keep her. While he was a work, she accidentally locked herself in the bathroom, and instead of contacting the owner, the hotel contacted the shelter to remove her. Remi is a snuggler, and about 65 lbs. She has the cutest "Ewok" ears! She is dog selective, and does not do well with cats or young children. Children over 12 years of age are fine. However, she is a very devoted and loving girl, who would make a great loving companion. She is housebroken, and does not need to be crated when you are gone. A male resident dog would be a good fit with her too.

We recommend obedience training for all newly adopted pyrs, to help you create a special bond with you and your new friend, and so you have a well behaved canine. Great Pyrenees are willing to learn, but are not as eager to comply with commands as much as other breeds. Learn more at Igpr.org

Apollo - Beautiful Boy - Foster Needed's Story

Apollo was found as a stray and not reclaimed from a shelter. He is a very friendly boy, who enjoys the company of other dogs. He is friendly with people and enjoys attention. We estimate he between 2- 3 years old. He rides fine in a vehicle and will need some basic leash training. Apollo is a pure bred Great Pyrenees. He is not good with small children in a home, and can be protective of his home when strangers are visiting. He has no problem with kids when out in public. This can be easily solved by crating him and giving him a treat filled kong to keep him busy.

We recommend obedience training for all newly adopted pyrs, to help you create a special bond with you and your new friend, and so you have a well behaved canine. Great Pyrenees are willing to learn, but are not as eager to comply with commands as much as other breeds. They are bred to be independent thinkers.
