As I depart Nashville now following another successful The Studio hosted by HotTopics.ht, I want to share some thoughts and a few grateful thank you’s to some amazing people. First and foremost, thank you to Philip Randerson and the HotTopics team for the opportunity to serve on the advisory board and the invitation to participate in my fourth The Studio event. Thank you and the award judges for selecting me for the Global CIO 100 Award for my work and results as CIO of Wrench Group this past year. I am honored to be included in this group of CIOs and to be recognized globally as a leader who delivers business value through differentiation with technology as well as a leader of leaders and a team of IT professionals second to none.
Thank you to all my friends and colleagues who traveled to Nashville from around the world to contribute to insightful and thought provoking conversations on panels, with keynote presentations and CIO Stories, and during breakfasts, lunches and dinners. I look forward to continuing our conversations of this week and learning from one another as we continue to invest in our careers and contribute to our organizations’ success.
Thank you also to IFS for your sponsorship of the Global CIO 100 Awards. And a special thank you to Heidi Newfield and Paul Overstreet Music for sharing some of your fabulous music with us during your Backstage Nashville performances. Music as a form of artistic communication presents a great opportunity for inclusive collaboration, innovation and relationships. Look for more from me later this week. There may even be a special appearance by a certain duo of German Shepherds.
Onward!

Kamala Harris mocks a guest who states “Jesus is Lord!” Kamala doesn’t want any of that Jesus talk at her event. I understand the gentlemen was forcibly escorted out. Who are you voting for?

I had a wonderful opportunity to sit down with Kani Talabani of HotTopics.ht about sixteen months ago for a CIO interview during The Studio. Kani leads with a unique and very comfortable interview style to help naturally explore related topics of importance and relevance to the current technology environment and the need to understand and apply knowledge and wisdom to a growing technology landscape that seems to be exponentially evolving day by day. I am looking forward to attending and accepting the 2024 CIO 100 Award at The Studio in Nashville in a few weeks.

As leaders and as Christians we are called to serve in ways beyond the income statement, beyond the board room. I recall a debate I had with a former colleague and friend back in the early 00’s about my involvement with a group of men, the 20/30 Club of Chicago. I was spending every Monday evening tutoring a young boy at Mercy Home for Boys & Girls and every Saturday helping run a basketball league for the boys who could maintain a C average in school. These boys were in and out of trouble, had parents who were either drug addicts or criminals or both. My friend commented to me once that my involvement was my good works project so I could be especially certain of my salvation. I argued that the time that I spent at Mercy Home and and the months devoted at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago reading to a young girl who was burnt on 80% of her body was less about my salvation assurance plan and all about the use of my time to extend my faith in obedience to the great commission to make disciples of all nations. Contagion of example in business and in life is a thing. For those of us who have tasted success, whatever your definition of success is, we are obligated to give back, to pay (not just writing checks) it forward. Even early in my career, before any pot of gold at the end of the rainbow payday or industry and association titles and awards, I volunteered time to others. My twenty-something aged friends could not understand why with a full time job and a Marine Corps Reaerve obligation every month, I would sign up to spend time with students and Junior Achievement in the inner city of Lansing, Michigan. My response was then as it is now. But by the Grace of God am I, a son of a coal miner and home maker, having grown up in a home or modest means, alive and have had the opportunities to succeed and travel and apply my intelligence to help others build and grow companies for financial gain and service to others. I share this not for any regoniton, but on the chance that it may inspire others to think beyond checking the box. Someone recently cautioned me about posting these topics and comments on Linked In. That I should “stick to business.” As near as I can tell we are all human and we don’t have the option of partitioning ourselves physically, mentally or spiritually. To wit, our work life and personal life and spiritual life are one. Have a great Sunday. May God bless you.
