Michele and Brian DeMoss are the heart and soul of Under The Awning. Michele, and her team, take pride in hand picking each line, to fill the shelves with beautiful, thoughtful gifts for your loved ones or yourself! "Too much" is never enough when it comes to the quality and charitable pieces.
You'll fall in love with how easy you can shop and contribute locally. But that's not all, most products give or partner with Charitable Organizations for each piece purchased. This is Michele's dream, to combine her passion of benevolent giving. So, on Giving Tuesday we encourage you to support your favorite nonprofits through monetary donations or by volunteering your time. And we encourage you to support the locally owned businesses on the historic Independence Square.

Reason #3 to Support Local
Small businesses make a major economic impact.
More than half of the U.S.’s jobs since 1995 were created by small businesses. And according to the SBA, since 1990, big businesses eliminated 4 million jobs, while small businesses added 8 million jobs. The more you shop at a local store, the more potential job opportunities you could help them provide.
Come see what our locally owned shops have waiting for you this season.
Reason #2 to Support Local
Small businesses create a sense of community.
You’re much more likely to get to know a small business owner in your neighborhood. According to a study conducted by Trulia and noted in Forbes, the second most popular desire amongst urbanites is a stronger sense of community – number one being more local restaurants. All restaurants on the historic Independence Square are locally owned.
Shop Small this holiday season. These great locally owned shops are offering specials and discounts today AND tomorrow.
Tickets are still available for our Neighborhood Breakfast on Saturday, November 26 at 10a at The Delaware event space. Breakfast is catered by Southern Luv KC.
Reason #1 to Support Local 🛍🛍
Small businesses give back (more) to your community. When you support a local business, you’re also supporting your town, city, and neighborhood. Business pay sales taxes to the city and county the business is located in. That tax money is used to support public schools, parks, roads, and sidewalks, as well as fund public service workers, like firefighters.
What’s more, according to Civic Economics, “on average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14% of purchases at chain stores.”
We invite you to shop local when you shop this holiday.
We are eternally grateful for your support of our historic district. On this Thanksgiving Day we give thanks to all those who have supported our nonprofit organization in our mission of creating an attractive and financially stable downtown while preserving our historic resources and enriching the community.
To those who shop and visit our restaurants, thank you. To those who volunteer their time and talents, thank you. To those who support financially, thank you.
Thank you, love the square.
