As Mexicans we often say, “The border crossed us,” when talking about the Southwest.

But the truth is… it crossed Native nations first.

Long before Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Texas became part of the United States, these lands were home to native peoples whose histories go back thousands of years; the Diné (Navajo), Tohono O’odham, Yaqui, Apache, Pueblo peoples, Tongva, Chumash, Esselen, and so many more.

Many Native nations survived multiple waves of colonization in just a few generations:
Spanish rule.
Then Mexican rule.
Then U.S. expansion.

Imagine your homeland becoming three different countries… without ever leaving it.

People were already here.

And their descendants still are.
