Scientists say a strong El Niño is forming in the Pacific Ocean, and it could become one of the most powerful events in over a century, though its final strength is still uncertain.
Warm ocean water is rapidly building up beneath the surface of the tropical Pacific, which is a key sign that an El Niño is developing. Weather agencies report a high chance it will fully form in the coming months, with some predictions suggesting sea temperatures could rise far above normal levels.
El Niño events happen when ocean and air patterns interact and change wind directions across the Pacific. These changes can affect weather around the world, including heavy rain in some regions and droughts in others. The strongest events often depend on whether trade winds weaken enough to allow the system to intensify.
Scientists warn that predicting its exact strength is difficult because small changes in winds and atmospheric conditions can either boost or weaken it. Some experts believe it could become a “super” El Niño, but others say it is still too early to confirm.
Historically, major El Niño events have been linked to extreme global weather and record high temperatures. If this one becomes very strong, it could also influence global climate patterns in the coming years.
