Micro-mercantile featuring art, gifts, events, and a little free plant library!

Abolish ICE, eat the rich, practice radical joy. I haven't been able to write consistently for a long time, but channeling my creative energy into physical art has been a huge relief these last few months. I spend most Saturday's sketching or collaging. Any art you see in the shop (by me) is pay-what-you-can and proceeds benefit immigrant, environmental, and reproductive justice.

To be honest, reopening hasn't been quite what I expected.

Traffic in the store has been slow. Which, knowing others are feeling the way I do these days (politically wrung out, existentially tormented, heartbroken on so many cultural fronts) makes total sense. I'm not really interested in buying cute stuff either when it feels like society is on the brink of collapse.

And then my decision to add food. Baking is always work. Baking, without childcare, with a breastfeeding infant, is a whole other level. Every time I turn on the oven I have to remind myself I really did love this once. That I was good at it.

I'm giving myself permission for this thing to get a little messier. Am I a business? On paper, yes. But I don't really give a crap about making money. I have the privilege of this being a passion project rather than essential income for my family. I keep joking with people that this is my little anti-capitalist venture, but it's not really a joke. What I really care about is community and ally-ship and vulnerability and joy.

I am also, in this transitional moment postpartum, craving lack of responsibility, not more of it, so I'm dropping the promise of baked goods. I want space to make art, so I've done some rearranging to accommodate that. I also miss adult-paced conversations about real stuff, so if you want to come by and pull up a chair/make some art/process the news/talk about plants, there's always a spot for you. I'd love to be part of your village if you're seeking one ❀

Get a slice of this beauty tomorrow! Carrot apple cake with lemon buttercream. Also happens to be dairy free!

Help grow this little project! I'm on the hunt for some shelving, and once I find it, the houseplants are in for a major pruning 😁 βœ‚ If you're curious about plant propagation, I'm always happy to share tips too! (It's probably the easiest and cheapest way to grow a plant collection)

We've got cookies, free coffee, and porch seats to enjoy this beautiful Saturday! Open until 3 p.m. :)

Bebe has arrived, and so have some changes to the shop:

🍰 Returning to our roots, we're bringing back baked goods! Tomorrow, our beloved salted chocolate chip cookies make their return πŸͺ With a three month old dictating the schedule, there will likely only be one or two things available each Saturday, and I’ll probably take some weeks off completely, but I'll always share what's coming on here!

✨ New in the shop is also some absolutely stunning work from artist Elaine Elledge. Elaine is a printmaker whose current work combines collections of monotypes and transparent papers into colorful installations and wall hangings that explore themes of weakness and regeneration. I feel so lucky to have her work up (particularly in this season of my own regeneration), and there are too many beautiful pieces to photograph, so come check them out ❀️

🌿 Lastly, we're starting an experiment: a little free plant library. Bring a cutting (or more!) in some water, take one along. If starting plants isn't your thing, I also have a few small plants for sale that are established and potted. (Also check out the little free *book* library in front of our shop.)

See you tomorrow!
