Small business is the backbone of our economy and we are blessed to have many small, multigenerational family businesses here in the North Country!

One of my personal favorites is Watkins Garden Center right here in the Glens Falls area. Iโ€™ve been fortunate to know this family for many years and theyโ€™ve done great work for me at my place over the years.

I enjoyed stopping in recently to visit with Pete Watkins and learn about some of their current challenges and catching up a bit. Thanks Pete!

Thank you Pete Watkins for a wonderful tour of Watkins Garden Center today! Nice to be away from the office to learn the concerns, challenges and goals of businesses that in so many ways contribute to the success and quality of our communities.
Iโ€™m proud of the strength of our areaโ€™s Boy Scouts of America troops. As a parent of a Scout, Iโ€™ve enjoyed working alongside a lot of truly wonderful adult leaders. More - itโ€™s been an honor and privilege to watch these boys develop skills and mature into young men.

This spring my son has been working on his own Eagle Scout project. Heโ€™s constructing a Covid Memorial Garden along the Warren County, New York Bike Path. He and Troop 16 Queensbury Scouts built a park bench and today they planted several trees, shrubs and flowers at the site. Itโ€™s really starting to take shape. Some more work remains but heโ€™s definitely got the heaviest lifting behind him now.

So thankful for the generous support of the scouts and the County. Special thanks also to Watkins Garden Center for their advice and contributions.

there is a wagon in there somewhere love vista Bubblegum supertunias
We have the start of a Butterfly Garden at Rock Hill Bakehouse. We will be adding more plantings (for both caterpillars and butterflies) over time and periodically posting about the progress. One of the important things I learned is that many nursery plants contain a systemic pesticide, that while they keep the plants looking great, they also are no good for caterpillars (no caterpillar food means no butterflies) for the amount of time the pesticide remains in the plants. Some of these plants in these pictures are transplants while some were purchased through Watkins Garden Center which has a great selection of plants for butterflies and they use no systemic pesticides (last 2 pictures). The Shirt Factory Annex, 18 Curran Lane, Glens Falls
Just planted some Yarrow, Bee Balm, Black Eyed Susans, Asters, Butterfly W**d, and more from Watkins Garden Center today (first picture). They don't use anything systemic on their plants as they sell to a lot of people putting in butterfly gardens. Also have a picture of the plants put in a couple of weeks ago (some are starting to flower). We used chipped wood for mulch, which will help keep some moisture in the soil and also will add some nutrients to the soil as they break down.
