The Environmental Learning Center is a partnership between Tacoma Public Schools and Metro Parks Tacoma to support education, sustainability and conservation. This joint-use facility is located on Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium grounds and features eight formal learning settings for SAMi and community use, communal space for collaborative and interpretive activities, workspace for SAMi and Zoo educators, coordination for Zoo staff and volunteers, and a setting for a nature-oriented early learning experience.
SAMi, one of the building’s primary tenants, is a high school within Tacoma Public Schools that partners closely with Metro Parks Tacoma and the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Since its founding in 2009, SAMi has created a powerful community of learners that contributes to the public educational mission of Metro Parks and the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
During the design process of Cline Elementary School, the team set goals to create a flexible, timeless, and safe space that promotes outdoor learning, maximizes natural light, involves the community, and ensures internal connectivity. These principles guided the design of the building and site.
The 2-story, 117,222-square-foot building features a central learning commons, serving as the campus’s educational hub with spaces for both large groups and personalized learning. Each grade level, from pre-k to fifth grade, has its own pod with direct access to the commons.
The campus includes areas to display student work and learning, as well as a “History of Cline” wall, celebrating the school’s legacy.

The seven-story tower offers new and expanded specialty pediatric healthcare services to children from Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades counties. FKP Architects served as the pediatric design consultant for the tower addition.
