THE SECOND LAST GOODBYE
EPISODE 2: PART 2
Rachel brushed it off, unaware of the slight tension in Mark’s voice. “He’s just different. Confident, but not in a show-off way. And his sense of humor is kind of fun. We talked a lot last night.”
Mark felt a tightness in his chest. He had never heard Rachel talk about someone like this before. He tried to ignore the feeling, reminding himself that Rachel was always friendly and open with new people.
But something about this felt different. A voice in the back of his mind kept whispering that he should have spoken up to Rachel earlier.
Over the next few weeks, Rachel and Tom’s friendship grew stronger. They often saw each other between classes or had lunch at the student café. Tom had a special way of making Rachel laugh, and their conversations were always lively and fun. Rachel enjoyed how easy it was to connect with him and often got lost in the flow of their chats.
Mark, however, couldn’t help feeling like he was losing his place in Rachel’s life. He saw how her face brightened when she talked about Tom and how she seemed distracted when they were together. He tried to be happy for her, telling himself she deserved it, but the growing sense of discomfort was hard to ignore.
One day, while studying in the library, Mark couldn’t stop his curiosity. He closed his notebook and looked at Rachel, who was focused on her laptop.
"So," he started, trying to keep his tone light, "you and Tom seem to be spending a lot of time together lately."
Rachel looked up, her face calm. “Yeah, he’s fun to hang out with,” she said simply.
“Is it... something more?” Mark asked, trying to control the shaking in his voice.
Rachel paused, choosing her words carefully. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “I like him, but... it’s complicated.”
“Complicated how?” Mark asked, his frustration slipping into his voice.
Rachel sighed, running a hand through her hair. “He’s just... different from anyone I’ve met. And sometimes, I feel like I can be more open with him than I’ve been with anyone else.”
Mark felt his heart sink. He wanted to say something—anything—that might change her mind, but the words wouldn’t come. He was caught between wanting to protect their friendship and regretting not taking the chance when he had it.
“That’s good,” Mark said quietly, forcing a smile. “You should be happy.” Rachel looked into his eyes for a moment, then said, “Thanks, Mark,” gently squeezing his hand. “You’re a good friend.”
Her words felt like a knife to his chest, but Mark forced himself to smile, pretending everything was fine.
As time went on, Tom made his feelings for Rachel clearer. He invited her to social events and asked her to study with him. Rachel wanted to stay close friends with Mark, but she couldn’t help being attracted to Tom’s charm and confidence.
Mark tried to ignore the changes. Rachel seemed distant and distracted, and he couldn’t help feeling like things were slipping away. He told himself he was overthinking, but deep down, he knew the truth.
One evening, as they sat on a bench outside the student center, Mark finally decided it was time to talk.
“Rachel,” he began, his voice tense, “can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” she said, turning to face him.
Mark took a deep breath. “Do you... have feelings for Tom?”
Rachel’s eyes widened, and she paused. “I... I don’t know,” she said quietly. “I care about him, but I don’t want to hurt you.”
Mark’s heart sank at her words. He wanted to tell her how he felt—that he had always cared about her and wanted more than friendship. But fear stopped him—fear of rejection and fear of losing her completely.
“It’s okay,” Mark said, forcing a smile. “I just want you to be happy.”
Rachel looked at him with a mix of gratitude and sadness, as though she knew things were changing but couldn’t stop it. They sat there in silence, both lost in their unspoken feelings. The distance between them felt heavier, as if a wall had quietly built itself between them.

THE SECOND LAST GOODBYE
~EPISODE 2: PART 1~❤️
As time went by, Mark and Rachel’s friendship remained close, but there was always something between them, a question they never asked. But life had other plans.
It was the start of their third year at Willow Creek University, and the campus buzzed with excitement as students reunited after summer break.
For Rachel and Mark, it was another semester of late-night study sessions and their usual routines. But this time, a new arrival named Tom was about to turn everything upside down.
It was early October when Tom Kingston appeared on campus. He was a transfer student from a larger university in the city, and from the moment he arrived, he seemed to draw people to him.
Tom was outgoing, confident, and effortlessly charming in ways that Mark wasn’t. With his dark hair, casual smile, and quick wit, he was the center of attention wherever he went.
Rachel met Tom at a campus event—a gathering that Rachel had only agreed to attend because her roommate Jessica insisted.
Mark had skipped it to work on an assignment, leaving Rachel feeling slightly out of place in the university’s old ballroom, which was dimly lit with fairy lights strung across the ceiling.
The soft hum of students talking filled the room, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.
Rachel sipped her soda, only partly paying attention as Jessica continued talking about her awful summer job.
She was clearly venting, frustrated with the whole experience.
Then, a new voice interrupted their conversation.
“For someone who hates these events, you seem to be having a great time,” the voice said in a playful tone.
Rachel turned and saw a tall guy standing nearby, holding a drink with a relaxed smile on his face.
He wore a shirt with buttons and had the sleeves rolled up, looking casual but nicely dressed.
Rachel raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Oh, really? And what made you think that?"
The guy laughed. "Well, for one thing, you keep looking at your watch every five minutes. And your friend here has been trying to get your attention for the last two."
Rachel looked at Jessica, who gave her an excited nod and whispered.
Rachel rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her smile. "Alright, you got me. I’m not really a fan of these events."
Tom Kingston," he said, offering his hand. "I just transferred here and thought I'd meet some interesting people."
Rachel shook his hand, noticing his firm grip and confident look. "I'm Rachel, and this is Jessica," she said, pointing to her friend.
"Nice to meet you both," Tom said, his smile growing. He looked back at Rachel. "So, what's your major? Let me guess—literature or art?"
"Almost," Rachel replied with a soft laugh. "I'm studying education. I want to be a teacher one day."
"Ah, guiding the next generation," Tom said with a playful smile. "No pressure at all."
Rachel found herself laughing, surprised by how easily he made her feel at ease. Tom had a way of steering the conversation that made her feel interesting and seen, something she didn’t experience often at these events.
Soon, Jessica went off to chat with other friends, leaving Rachel and Tom in deep conversation.
Tom shared funny stories about his life at his old university, and Rachel found herself charmed by his confidence and quick humor. He listened closely whenever she spoke, as if every word mattered.
By the end of the night, Rachel realized she was genuinely enjoying his company, something she hadn’t expected.
For Tom, Rachel had stood out from the crowd from the moment he saw her. There was something about her quiet confidence and genuine nature that made him want to know more.
And when he finally approached her, he’d already decided he wanted to make a connection.
Mark didn’t find out about Rachel’s encounter with Tom until the next day. They had agreed to meet for a study session in the library, but when Rachel arrived, she seemed different.
She smiled to herself, lost in thought, while turning her notes.
"What’s got you in such a good mood?" Mark asked, noticing the change.
Rachel looked up, slightly surprised, as if she hadn’t noticed she was smiling.
"Oh, it’s nothing," she said softly. "I went to the event last night with Jessica."
Mark raised an eyebrow. "I thought you hated those things."
"I do," Rachel admitted, "but it wasn’t so bad. I met someone. His name is Tom. He's a new transfer student... an interesting guy.
Mark tried to stay relaxed, but the way Rachel said "Tom" made him feel uncomfortable. Interesting how? he asked, trying to keep his voice calm.

THE SECOND LAST GOODBYE
EPISODE 1: PART 1 ❤️
It was the beginning of the fall semester at Willow Creek University, and the campus was bustling with energy. Students were walking to classes, joining different clubs, and hanging out under the big, old oak trees that dotted the campus.
The university had a unique, charming look with ivy growing along the stone walls, and the old pathways made of smooth, worn stones gave it a historic feeling, almost like it was a place where countless students had studied for many generations.
For Mark, a second-year business student, this busy environment was a good way to escape his own heavy thoughts. Mark wasn’t the type of person who made friends easily. He preferred to stay in the background, observing others rather than joining in. He wasn’t unfriendly, but he was used to a quiet, thoughtful life.
Growing up in a peaceful home with his parents—who were both teachers—Mark learned to be thoughtful and careful with his words. His parents valued calm and silence, and Mark had grown up that way, too.
One day, Mark noticed a girl named Rachel in his Introduction to Philosophy class. She sat two rows in front of him. Her auburn hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, and she had a quiet focus that set her apart from the others in the class.
While most of the students either looked bored or pretended to take notes, Rachel was paying close attention to the professor.
The professor was talking about Socratic dialogues, which are a series of questions and answers used to discover the truth. Rachel listened carefully, nodding her head when she agreed, frowning slightly when she thought deeply, and sometimes even smiling when the professor made an interesting point.
Mark didn’t quite understand why, but he felt a strong attraction toward Rachel. It wasn’t just that she was pretty, though she certainly was, in a simple and natural way. But it was more about her personality—she seemed warm, curious, and genuinely interested in what was happening around her.
She had a way of laughing easily, paying close attention to others when they spoke, and speaking with a confidence that made people stop and listen.
Then, one day, something happened that brought Mark and Rachel together. After an exciting class discussion, their professor announced a new group project.
Mark usually felt nervous about group projects because he didn’t like speaking up in front of others, but this time, he ended up in a group with Rachel and three other students.
After class, their group gathered to talk about the project.
Rachel took the lead right away, pulling out her notebook with a determined look. “Okay,” she said, “our task is to analyze a current issue using the Socratic method. Does anyone have any ideas?”
The group members exchanged glances, each one waiting for someone else to speak up. Mark felt a little nervous, but when no one else spoke, he decided to share an idea he had been thinking about. Clearing his throat, he said, “How about we look at the ethics of social media and how it affects our communication?”
Rachel’s eyes lit up with excitement. “That’s a fantastic idea!” she said. “Social media is such a big part of our lives now, and there’s so much we could talk about. We can explore how it shapes the way we think, how we talk to each other, and even how we see ourselves.”
As the group started brainstorming and discussing the project, Mark felt a growing sense of comfort. He realized he wasn’t as nervous as he had expected to be. Rachel was kind and encouraging, making everyone feel included.
For the first time, Mark found himself enjoying a group project, especially because it gave him a chance to work alongside Rachel. She made him feel like his ideas were valuable, and her enthusiasm inspired him to speak up more.
From that day on, Mark looked forward to their group meetings. Not only was he excited about the project, but he also enjoyed every moment he spent with Rachel. She was more than just a classmate now; she was someone he admired, someone he wanted to get to know better. Working together gave them a chance to talk about their interests, their dreams, and even their fears.
Through their project, Mark discovered that Rachel was just as thoughtful as he was, though in a different way. While he preferred to think quietly, Rachel loved to ask questions and start conversations. They balanced each other well, and slowly, a friendship began to grow between them.
As the semester went on, Mark and Rachel continued to learn from each other. They laughed together, studied together, and shared parts of their lives that they hadn’t shared with anyone else.
For Mark, the fall semester at Willow Creek University would be unforgettable, not only because of the lessons he learned in his classes, but because of the friendship he found with Rachel, a friendship that changed him in ways he never expected.

THE SECOND LAST GOODBYE
EPISODE 1: PART 2 ❤️
------------------------------------------------
One evening, after finishing up studies together, they sat on a bench outside the library. The night air was cool, and the campus was quiet.
"So," Rachel said, breaking the silence, "you’re rather quiet in class. I didn’t think you were the deep-thinking type."
Mark laughed. “I wouldn’t say that. I just like listening more than talking, I guess.”
“Why?” Rachel asked, looking at him with genuine curiosity.
Mark hesitated. “I think there’s a lot you can learn by observing people and listening to what they say or don’t say.”
Rachel thought about this. “Most people talk to fill the silence. But you… you seem okay with it.”
Mark smiled. “Silence isn’t always bad. Sometimes it says more than words.”
Rachel looked at him, as if trying to understand him better. “I’ve never thought of it like that. I usually speak my mind even when I probably shouldn’t.”
“I noticed,” Mark replied with a gentle smile.
Rachel laughed, and her joy spread to him, filling him with happiness too. She lay back and looked up at the sky. "I've always been like that. My mom used to call me her 'little chatterbox.' I think she secretly liked it, even when I got into trouble."
Mark was curious. “Is your family from around here?”
"No," Rachel shook her head. "My dad was in the military, so we moved around a lot. Every few years, I’d be the new kid. Guess that’s why I always had to be outgoing."
Mark nodded, understanding her a bit more. He admired her ability to make friends and adapt.
“What about you?” Rachel asked. “Have you lived in Willow Creek your whole life?”
“Almost,” Mark replied. “My parents are teachers, so we never moved. It’s a quiet town, and I like that.”
Rachel smiled. "It's nice to be somewhere that stays the same."
They sat together quietly, both feeling comfortable. Mark felt like he had known her for a long time. Being with her made him feel relaxed.
As time went on, their conversations grew deeper. They talked about family, hopes, and dreams. Mark told her about his love for cars and his plan to take over his uncle’s auto shop. Rachel shared her dream of becoming a teacher, inspired by her mom.
As their friendship grew, Mark couldn’t ignore a feeling between them. He often wondered if she felt it too but was afraid to ask, worried it might spoil their friendship.
One night, as they walked back to the dorms, Rachel stopped and turned to him.
“Mark,” she said, her voice quiet, “can I ask you something?”
"Of course," Mark replied, trying to sound calm, even though his heart was racing.
Rachel looked down, thinking for a moment. "Do you ever wonder if things could be different between us?"
Mark’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t sure if she was talking about their friendship or something more.
Noticing his hesitation, Rachel quickly added, “Not that I’m suggesting anything. It’s just… sometimes I feel like there’s something unspoken between us, and I don’t know if I’m just imagining it.”
Mark took a deep breath. This was the moment he had feared and wished for. He could tell the truth or keep their friendship safe. He found it hard to reply, feeling divided. His mind filled with options, but he chose caution over confession.
“Rachel,” he said cautiously, “you’re not imagining things. But… our friendship really matters to me, and I don’t want to risk losing it.”
Rachel looked at him, a shadow of disappointment crossed her face, though she nodded. “I understand,” she said softly. “I don’t want to lose that either.”
They kept walking in silence, each deep in their own thoughts. Mark felt a small regret, wondering if he’d missed his chance. But as he reminded himself, keeping his feelings hidden might be the only way to keep Rachel close, even if it meant never knowing what could have been.
He convinced himself it was better this way, though he couldn’t help but feel that their story had only just begun.
