Harris Health was one of the nation’s first public healthcare systems to embrace the concept of neighborhood primary care.

Dr. Carlos Vallbona dedicated his career to family and community medicine and served as the chief of staff for the system’s ambulatory care services during four decades. He advocated for the system to provide high-quality, cost-effective primary care, prevention and wellness services in the most convenient settings for patients.

Vallbona’s stewardship for the program from its beginnings in two modest health centers opened in 1967, to the robust network of primary and outpatient care locations we operate today, which includes health centers, same day clinics, dental services, specialty clinics, oncology, radiation therapy, dialysis and homeless shelter clinics.

Harris Health would like to recognize its newest in-kind partner, Frost Bank, for donating 125 backpacks and school supplies for the Harris Health Back-to-School drive. Frost Bank employees assisted in preparing and delivering backpacks to our pediatric patients and students from the Pasadena community at Harris Health Strawberry Health Center's Health Fair. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital to celebrate the 8th Anniversary of the Northeast Community Farmers Market on Saturday. Nearly 300 community members, staff and partners came together for a morning filled with wellness, fresh produce, community resources, giveaways and live music.

We were also joined by representatives from the offices of U.S. Rep. Christian D. Menefee, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Texas State Sen. Borris L. Miles, who presented proclamations and certificates of recognition honoring the Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council and the Northeast Community Farmers Market’s eighth anniversary.

Join Fit Houston for a morning of movement, connection, and celebration at the Northeast Community Farmers Market.

We will gather at the market for a community slow bike ride designed to be welcoming, social, and enjoyable for riders of all experience levels.

Our ride will begin at the Northeast Community Farmers Market and return there at the finish, where we will celebrate the market’s 8-year anniversary.

Bring your bike, invite a friend, and enjoy a relaxed ride with neighbors while supporting an important community gathering place.

Whether you are new to group rides or a regular cyclist, this is an opportunity to move at an easy pace, connect with the community, and celebrate eight years of fresh food, local vendors, and neighborhood wellness.

Whether a hospital stay is long or short, the experience can be isolating and sometimes patients need a furry interaction to brighten their spirits.

It’s been 35 years since Harris Health embraced pet therapy—an animal-assisted activity and therapy program—that brings together certified pet therapy animals and their handlers to enhance the healing environment for patients at our hospitals.

Patients, their families and staff enjoy it when our four-legged friends stop by for a pet and a cuddle.

Patrick Vincent was in pain when he walked. He needed two hip replacements. But before he could have surgery, his team recommended physical therapy.

“I had a negative outlook of physical therapy,” he recalls. “But after I met with Michael DeArman [senior physical therapist], that changed. He explained how important it was for me to be strong for the surgery.”

Vincent went to physical therapy two to three times a week. His exercises ranged from leg presses, to exercises that worked his back and chest muscles.

“I tell you, Texas brought me back to life,” says the New York transplant. “Mike changed my perspective. I was in so much pain, but therapy helped me get to where I needed to be before my hip replacement surgery.”

Today, Vincent is recovering from his hip surgery and feels like a new man.

Hundreds of community members joined Harris Health on Saturday for Harris Health Strawberry Health Center's Health & Wellness Fair, making it a wonderful day of health, wellness and connection.

Throughout the event, Harris Health teams provided hundreds of health screenings and immunizations, shared valuable health education resources, conducted mammogram screenings, offered eligibility counseling and financial assistance information, and connected families with care and services. Attendees also enjoyed food, games, giveaways and back-to-school support for local students.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out and prioritized their health and well-being. We are especially grateful to the dedicated Harris Health staff and volunteers who spent the day caring for our community and helping make this event a success.

Together, we're building a healthier Harris County, one community at a time.

Thanks to the generosity of our in-kind donors and Harris Health staff, 500 backpacks have been filled with school supplies and are ready to be delivered to Harris Health pediatric patients and nearby local schools!
