Congratulations to Jesuit High School of Tampa as they celebrate their 125th anniversary! At their Mass of the Holy Spirit today, they had a few familiar faces, including Fr. Douglas Hypolite, S.J., who served as their principal, prefect of discipline, and rector, as well as Strake Jesuit alumni Fr. Joseph Carola, S.J. ’80, and Fr. David Paternostro, S.J. ’04, who both spent their regency years in Tampa.
Today, we celebrated the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit! May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us throughout the year. Thank you to Fr. Christopher Meyer ’09 from Saint Faustina Catholic Church, Fr. Norbert Maduzia from St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, and Deacon Mike Quiray from St. Francis de Sales for joining us!
At our annual Orientation to Ownership on Saturday, SJ parents learned how the school encourages students to take personal responsibility for their academics while gradually shifting parental involvement to allow students to function independently. The goal is for students to graduate from SJ with the skills, self-awareness, and self-advocacy to excel at the university level without parental oversight. It was a great morning of collaboration!

Aidan Agostinelli ’26 ran an interior vehicle cleaning business over the summer and donated 10% of his profits to the Strake Jesuit Crusader Fund! He felt drawn to donate because the Crusader Fund helps support several of his classmates on financial aid who desire to be Men for Others.

Happy Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! Today, we remember the Blessed Mother being taken body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Fr. Jeff Johnson, S.J., reminded us of the theological virtue of hope and how we can look to Mary as a sign of hope. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God!

Jesuit Football wrapped up their Green/White scrimmage and BBQ Kickoff on Saturday with their third annual retreat. Former NFL veteran David King ’08 kicked things off with a motivational talk and Q&A before the team split into small group discussions and presentations about team culture, identity, and values. The team gathered at the end of the day to announce this year’s leadership council and team captains before concluding with a celebration of the Mass. These young men are ready to roll into the season!

A group of faculty and staff participated in the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Colleagues Retreat at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Sedalia, Colorado. This annual silent retreat followed the rhythm of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and helped them deepen their relationship with God. St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us!
Matthew Parker ’25 was recently interviewed on Houston Life to discuss his upcoming open-water relay swim of the Catalina Channel! The swim will be a 20-mile journey from Catalina Island to the coast of Southern California. Matthew is a co-captain of a team of five high schoolers who have been training for the swim, which is scheduled for early August. They are the first teenage relay team from Texas to attempt this! Another summer pilgrimage is in the books! Mrs. Jennifer Luke and Dr. Tommy Romano led our students on a pilgrimage to France and Spain. They took a bus tour of Paris and, in Lourdes, learned about the life of St. Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. In Spain, they visited sites significant to the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola and saw the places that impacted his life.

Strake Jesuit Rugby recently participated in its first international tournament in Spain! In addition to competing, the team made a pilgrimage in the footsteps of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits.

Our students represented Strake Jesuit at the Catholic Literary Arts High School Writers Institute last week! They attended writing workshops, tried new craft skills, refined their writing styles, and worked with guest authors James Matthew Wilson and Brigid Pasulka. They also learned how to reflect on God’s presence in their lives and craft personal narratives. It was a great week of writing and fellowship!
