**Tickets now on sale for Las Fenix LIVE in concert at HCCC on August 1st!**
Inspired by "La Fuente Del Deseo," a solo exhibition by Georgina Treviño that transports viewers to the vibrant norteño culture of the Mexico-U.S. border, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is pleased to present a special one-night concert with Las Fenix on Thursday, August 1st!
Las Fenix is an all-female norteño band featuring five sisters from Houston, Texas. The group has made their mark on a traditionally male-dominated genre with high-energy live performances and a singular sound that brings a contemporary pop valence to traditional Mexican cumbia and norteño sounds. The band has toured extensively in Mexico and the U.S., performing at venues including Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium and acting as musical representatives of the “Don’t Mess With Texas” campaign.
Doors will open at 6:15, and the concert starts at 7pm. Before the performance, visitors will also have the opportunity to meet exhibiting artist Georgina Treviño in person and buy customized exhibition merchandise!

**"Tree of Life" Concert with DACAMERA, 11/9 at 5:30PM!**
Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 9th, when HCCC and Da Camera of Houston will present a free, one-night chamber music concert inspired by the fall exhibition, "Tree of Life." This unique exhibition showcases sculptural objects and woodwind instruments made from the African blackwood tree, which has a nearly black core and is prized in instrument making for the melodious tones that can be produced from its density and fine grain. Musicians from DACAMERA’s Young Artist Program will present works inspired by the artwork in the gallery. Experience this distinctive and historic craft material through the lens of music in this special program, supported by Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.

We’re excited to bring visiting artist, Alan Sonfist , to the University of Houston this season! In October 2022, he will lead UH students from the arts and sciences in hands-on field research gathering soil samples for a collaborative work of art; see link in our bio to work with Alan. Stay tuned for news about his upcoming artist talk which will be open to the public on Oct. 13.
Alan has received critical acclaim for his innovative use of urban spaces to design havens of nature. His early work in the 1960s and 1970s helped pioneer the burgeoning movement of site-specific sculpture. Today, he continues to promote sustainable energy and strives to raise awareness for global climate change with his international projects. Recently, Alan collaborated with city planners in Pori, Finland and Tampa, Florida to create public spaces that visualize natural landscapes from the past.
Alan’s works are included in many international public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Villa Celle, in Tuscany, Italy, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, and the Museum Ludwig in Koln, Germany.

Our Story
The Mitchell Center was formed in late 2003 with a gift from George Mitchell in honor of his wife, Cynthia Woods Mitchell, whose long-standing love of the arts was so evident throughout her life. The Mitchell family’s desire was to make a donation that would impact each of the University of Houston’s strong arts programs. Working closely with UH leadership, the family proposed a programmatic alliance among the schools of Art, Music, and Theatre & Dance, as well as the Creative Writing Program and Blaffer Art Museum. $16 million was designated to form an endowment for the Centers programs, and $4 million covered the renovation of the School of Theatre & Dance facility, making room for new studios, a lobby for the Wortham Theatre, and offices for the Mitchell Center staff. The building was renamed the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.
