Feelin the flow

I must have been a geologist in a former life because I will actually take artistic pictures of rock strata...while on vacation...for fun. A recent vacation to the Ouachitas in Arkansas reminded me it's time to post a few illustrations with rock strata. Spending time in nature really helps lend some credence and beauty to these oil and gas illustrations.

It's always good to practice skills like modeling cracks, crevices, and destruction in CGI.

Yes, you read that correctly...screening adolescents for bariatric surgery. I make no judgement whatsoever. Rather, I look at this as an incredible opportunity to produce a high quality, eye-catching illustration that will engage pediatricians and stimulate their interest in learning more. Most people will never truly understand the great lengths physicians go to in order to stay current in their knowledge of medicine. It's very satisfying to participate in that endeavour through illustration.

Sure you have the final X-ray and maybe an SEM of your product, but does that tell enough of the story? Why not create a chemical formula montage and then a 3D/CGI model of a key component in your product at a scale people can't normally see? Now you have a complete linear story to tell. Even something gross like hyperemesis gravidarum (nausea and vomiting during pregnancy) can be beautifully illustrated. Medical and scientific illustration often needs an eye that can turn the "ick factor" into the "it factor". It's a pleasure to work among the few that can call themselves medical illustrators.

From a technique standpoint, it's no mystery that I like fractals. They are fun to create but they add a very fluid, ethereal, almost magical energy to any illustration. In this case they were used to represent nausea. The excited part of the brainstem is the trigger center for emesis.

TBT to one of those times it was necessary to combine biology and chemistry. This is one of those rare times, late in the process, the client did not want anything but white behind the titling. By going really warm and punching up the color it certainly framed the title lockup nicely. It's good to be flexible!
