Are you noticing the scale isn’t not moving? Perhaps your clothes are starting to fit more snug after bariatric surgery? What could be causing weight regain??

Grazing is an unhealthy eating habit that could develop after bariatric surgery.

Also known as “snacking all day,” grazing involves not paying attention (mindless eating) and eating small amounts throughout the day, which can add up in calories. And these calories are typically not from healthy nutritious foods: crackers, chips, popcorn, candy, cookies, etc.

Binge eaters eat large amounts of food. But after bariatric surgery, the small stomach can’t hold large volumes like before. So people with past binge eating habits may end up nibbling all day, which ultimately results in eating a large amount of food…just spread out through the day. The stomach has changed…but the mindset has not.

The solution: stop snacking.
Often times, we’re not hungry. We might be bored or stressed.
Have portion controlled meals with adequate protein (about 20-30 grams) and balance this with fiber (veggies, fruits, beans) along with some healthy fats (nuts, olives, avocados).

Do you love the flavors of a Big Mac, but you don’t appreciate all the calories, fat, cholesterol, salt, and basically all that junk that comes with it?

Check out this healthy and fresh version of a Big Mac, in salad form! It’s low salt, low fat, low sugar, and low carb! Few tips to keep this salad on track with your healthy lifestyle:

- Choose lean ground beef: 90% lean or higher! Or go with ground turkey
- Limit your dressing to 2 Tbs or less
- Limit to 2 Tbs of shredded cheese or less
- Choose pickles without sugar listed in the ingredients
- Load up with dark leafy lettuce instead of iceberg

Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Red onion
- Pickle slices
- Romaine or any leafy green lettuce
- Thousand Island dressing

How to make:
- Sauté ground beef, and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Set aside and keep warm.
- Chop romaine lettuce, thinly sliced red onions
- Assemble your salad bowl: big handfuls of lettuce, top with shredded cheese, sliced onion, and pickles. Add warm ground beef and provide dressing on the side.
- Optional: top with sesame seeds!

Happy Monday everyone! How well did you handle Halloween last week? It can be tough to stay on track when treats are all around.

As more winter holidays approach, it may get tougher to stay focused as more food distractions surface.

So what will be your game plan then? How will you tackle these deterrents of a healthy lifestyle?

Perhaps have your own healthy snacks to keep around. Maybe clear your mind by going for a walk. Or consider allowing 1 indulgence per day so you dont get FOMO (fear of missing out).

There are many action plans to take. Start now. Last 2 months of the year. Finish strong!

Let’s make mini pizzas!

We were inspired by and her fun way to eat pizza. For added fiber, make these with whole wheat tortillas and some fresh spinach.

Mini Pepperoni Pizza Ingredients:
- Whole wheat tortillas
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Baby spinach
- Turkey pepperoni
-Pizza sauce aka marinara sauce

How to make:
1. Preheat the oven to 400F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Using a cooking/biscuit cutter (or the rim of a small glass), cut out small circles of tortillas.
3. Arrange on a baking sheet. Layer each tortilla circle with 2Tbs of shredded cheese, a few spinach leaves, and 2 pepperoni slices.
4. Bake at 400F for 8 to 10 minutes.
5. Dip these mini pizzas with marinara sauce. Each mini pizza has 4g of protein.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is in full swing!

Visiting the rodeo can be fun, but tiring and not the best for our bodies. Keep these healthy and handy tips in mind for your next Rodeo trip!

1. Limit carbs: most carbohydrate choices will be low in fiber, so it’s best just to toss them. Skip the bun, pass up on the bread, limit fries and chips.🍞🥨🍔

2. Focus on protein: carnival and rodeo food is far from healthy. So try to pick better choices when possible, try focusing on proteins (turkey legs, sausage on a stick, BBQ)🍗🥩

3. Share fried foods and desserts: a rodeo visit isn’t complete without some corndogs, churros and funnel cake. Split these with your family and friends to avoid overindulging and feeling sick!!🍟🍦

4. Stay hydrated with water or diet drinks: save your calories for food, rather than sugary drinks. If you drink alcohol, limit to 1 drink.💧🥤🍻

5. Wear comfy clothes and shoes: get your steps in and burn more calories by walking all over the fairgrounds. 👢👟

6. Bring plasticware: bringing your own knives and forks can help you cut your food into smaller, digestible pieces. This can also help you cut your food into shareable portions! 🍴

And don’t forget to bring sanitizing wipes to keep your hands clean!! Y’all have a good time now, ya hear?!

Check out these 4 priorities for a healthy lifestyle, and which can also promote weight loss.

1. Sleep at least 7 hours nightly. Your body needs rest to destress from the day. This also helps to lower hunger and weight gaining hormones (such as insulin and cortisol)

2. Plan all meals and snacks with high quality protein (lean meats, eggs, low fat dairy) and high fiber foods (veggies, fruits, nuts, avocado, beans)

3. Move your body daily. Walking daily (~7500 steps, averaging about 3.5 miles, or around 1 hour) can help increase blood circulation and help with digestion.

4. Add 2 days of lifting weights in your exercise routine to help build calorie blasting muscles!
