When Layna Haidar was 20 years old, she followed in her mother’s footsteps and chose UTHealth Houston for her gynecologic care. There, she became a patient of Allan R. Katz, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist at UT Physicians.
From her very first visit, Layna found more than a physician. She found a trusted partner in her health journey. Dr. Katz supported her through complex challenges while consistently advocating for her care.
Nearly 40 years later, that trust has come full circle. Today, Layna’s daughters also see Dr. Katz, benefiting from care rooted in a deep understanding of their family’s history.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate moms like Layna, whose care and guidance help shape the health and strength of generations to come.

What if one of the easiest ways to support your brain and heart health was already in your kitchen?
Berries, especially blueberries and strawberries, are gaining attention for more than just their flavor. They’re rich in antioxidants and plant compounds that may help protect brain cells, reduce inflammation, and support the blood vessels your brain depends on, according to David B. Babitt, MD, a neurologist at UTHealth Houston.
These small but mighty fruits have also been linked to better memory, improved blood sugar control, and long-term cognitive health.
Wondering how much to eat, and whether fresh or frozen matters? Get the berry best insights and tips at the link in the comments.

Born with a rare genetic condition causing uncontrollable movements, 17-year-old Carter Felix spent much of his life fighting to do everyday tasks like walking, writing, and even holding a utensil. After years of searching for answers, his family connected with UT Physicians, where a team of specialists listened and explored every possible option. Together, they developed a highly complex treatment plan including a rare pediatric deep brain stimulation procedure designed to help regulate his movements.
“Although DBS sounds scary, it is reversible and can significantly help children move more smoothly when done with the right neurologist-neurosurgeon team,” said Manish Shah, MD, a pediatric neurosurgeon at UT Physicians.
The results have been life-changing. Today, Carter is now moving with greater control, greater independence, and even joining his school golf team. His progress has exceeded expectations and is opening doors once thought out of reach.
Read how this groundbreaking procedure is not only transforming Carter’s life, but offering hope to families facing the same diagnosis. https://www.utphysicians.com/story/pediatric-deep-brain-stimulation-surgery-success/

Stress is more than a feeling. It can actually change how your brain functions.
Over time, high levels of stress hormones can lead to memory problems, mood swings, and foggy decision-making. Chronic inflammation can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Most people don’t realize it’s happening until it starts affecting everyday life.
But the effects can be reversed. Research shows that the brain can recover, and a few simple daily habits can make a real difference.
Learn what stress is really doing to your brain and the science-backed ways to protect and restore it in the comments.
