A Death By A Thousand Cuts.
“Let's dispel for a moment the notion that restaurants are "back," because restaurants didn't go anywhere. Those lucky enough to stay open had to push through by making dark deals and soul-wrenching decisions just to wake up dazed and blinking on the other side of this pandemic wondering what the hell just happened. Thousands of restaurants have permanently closed, and as a restaurant owner myself I am keenly aware that thousands more are one bad week away from the worst possible outcome. Restaurants post-pandemic remind me of my seven-year-old rosemary bush after a long winter: withered and pale, but not beaten, and oh-so-ready to blossom in the sun once again.” - John Winterman, Food & Wine Magazine
I felt that. When I read that,
I felt that to my core. Many of you know our story …
When the pandemic began we immediately went to work supporting our own community and others.
We started with closing our restaurant on a Monday in February 2020 and inviting our community to join us for dinner in Chinatown, a community that was hard hit from day one. As the pandemic grew so did the needs within our own community. We launched a social media campaign aimed at supporting our own beloved Spring Branch community. Many thought the concept was kinda weird. Why would a restaurant owner ask his followers to go out and spend money at other restaurants in his community? The simple answer is, it's ultimately about saving our community. The community I grew up in, the people that live and work here; the businesses I visited as a kid and love. I wanted to ensure THEY survived.
I go to bed happy and proud that in the last two years I’ve been able to help shine light on our community businesses and help some stay afloat, yet depressed and ashamed that there is a very real possibility my own business may not be one of them. Unfortunately we ARE one bad week away from the worst possible outcome.
The reality is here we are two years later, on “the other side” and things still aren't pretty. Most of us are still feeling the aftermath of it all and are very much like that rosemary bush, not quite beaten but withered and pale AF.
I have spoken with friends that own well known small business establishments around town and in our own community and we are all in the same boat. We’re fighting to stay alive, even on “the other side”. We still aren’t through this, we are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of labor, IF we can find labor, rising cost of goods, rent deferrals that now have to be paid, and the list goes on. We’ve been tasked with what seems to be the impossible - staying open. I’ve had numerous friends committ suicide due to the pandemic, seeing your business dwindle day by day takes a toll. It’s hard to wrap your head around what you’ve been through and what still lies ahead. It’s like death by a thousand cuts.
We’ve put our loved ones through hell and back several times over just to get to “the other side” and still feel like we are struggling to stay alive. To stay open. To support our families.
We continue to face the fact that we may lose everything. EVERY. THING.
We’ve seen places we love shutter, we’ve lost friends, we have struggled along with you. These past two years have taken a toll on so many, let’s continue to support small. Let’s continue to support our community.
The mom and pop shops still need you because it’s far from over. Please continue to support the places you love. Our small family run establishments continue to push to survive because we are “oh-so-ready to blossom in the sun once again.”
What can you do to support us and other small businesses still feeling the impact?
Enjoy a meal at a favorite small restaurant, invite a friend…or two. Support small.
There are so many local shops in our area to explore. Get out. Support your community. We live and work here. We choose to invest in our community and we ask that you continue to invest in us.

Please consider supporting our friends at Blind Girl Productions - Resale & Vintage in their efforts to help find a cure for blindness. We ask that you consider sponsoring their team in the Foundation for Fighting Blindness Walk on April 9th.
Please read the post below to learn more about our friend Sondra’s journey and how you can support finding a cure.
As many of you know, I am legally blind due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. Finding a cure for blindness has added meaning and urgency for us this year. Our 4 year old granddaughter Camilla was recently diagnosed with Usher’s Syndrome. She has moderate to severe hearing loss. Because of this, her doctors did genetic testing on her and me. The tests show I have Usher’s Syndrome and passed these genes through my daughter to my granddaughter.
Usher’s Syndrome causes hearing loss and vision loss/impairment due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. It has been very difficult and heartbreaking watching my daughter and granddaughter struggle with this diagnosis.
We have a great support system but we need more! We are excited about current trials and medical break troughs to cure Retinitis Pigmentosa due to Usher’s Syndrome. This is where we need your help with collecting funds for research by the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Our hope is there will be a cure before Camilla begins her vision loss journey.
Please help us with the fight to find a cure for blindness.
