Color theory explains why that viral blue/black or white/gold illusion drove us so damn nuts. Color is relative to what colors are surrounding it, the temperature of the light, the value and saturation & the subject matter. Our eyes can trick us and tell a story that isn’t necessarily objectively true. For instance, the shadow area of a white and gold dress could mimic the light area of a blue and black dress. Like a good juicy politician’s quote, context & nuance matters. A good artist knows how to use color, value, temperature, subject matter and saturation to create a feeling and convince a viewer’s eyes of something that might not be what’s really there. Often when I paint, I’ll throw in complimentary colors into surrounding areas to have an affect that almost vibrates or glows. Or I’ll use a color from the shadow area in one spot, in a light area of another section. ———— Thanks @explaining_sciencee for posting this video. 👏🏼
