Here’s a kudos to two special OST/Sourh Union residents. They are the definition of boots on the ground when it soles to getting things done in this community and we’re honored by Honoring South Union’s Champions: Joan Alexander & Priscilla Jackson
District D stands proud this month as we spotlight the tireless efforts of Joan Alexander and Priscilla Jackson, the Dynamic Duo whose dedication has sparked a wave of positive change across South Union. Together, they’ve revived a key civic club, becoming beacons of hope and action in our beloved community.
Their commitment is evident at every turn—from National Night Out to Senior Day festivities, and proactive Public Safety Meetings. These two women have worked in close concert with Councilwoman Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz’s office to achieve significant improvements, such as bus shelter upgrades, street clean-ups, and the eradication of illegal dumping, enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
Joan and Priscilla’s approach of direct action and collaboration with our office serves as a stellar model for civic engagement. They remind us that the power of community is realized when we join hands and work together.
We are inspired by their tenacity and the palpable love they have for South Union. Joan and Priscilla, your spirit of service is a guiding light, showing us what we can achieve in unity. Thank you for your unwavering commitment and for being an integral part of our community’s heartbeat.

Dream Academy Houston recently had the opportunity to meet and walk with Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet that represents a ten-year-old Syrian girl who faces the challenges of being refugee. We recently walked just a fraction of the journey in Third Ward that Little Amal and many other refugees have had to make to seek shelter and exposure to better opportunities.
As an after school program, It’s important that we expose our students to different and rich programs to diversify their cultural awareness and enhance their emotional language and understanding. The project uses art, storytelling, and performances, which helps to engage our communities and promote empathy and understanding for the challenges faced by refugees.
Little Amal and “The Walk” aims to shed light on the experiences of refugees, create conversations about migration and displacement, and foster a sense of solidarity and support for those affected by these issues.
