Once upon a curb, there sat a little rabbit eating grass.

He was alone, though we’re quite certain he hadn’t always been. And when a kind father and son spotted him there, they decided that a little rabbit sitting beside the road deserved somewhere safer to be.

Eventually, his story found its way to us.

He arrived a little thin, with ears clogged from mites, and with absolutely no hesitation about making friends.

A gentle brush, some medicine, a warm place to rest, and Mr. Tumnus seemed quite content to settle into his next chapter.

Since then, we’ve learned that he takes treats very politely, gives little kisses, has remarkably good litter box manners, and would choose a warm hand resting on his forehead over just about anything.

Our volunteers have also learned that ending a petting session is a serious matter. Tumnus will watch you walk away with the quiet disappointment of a bunny who thought surely you had nowhere more important to be.

Perhaps that’s why Mr. Tumnus felt like the right name for him.

A gentle little creature who appeared unexpectedly, charmed everyone he met, and brought just a tiny bit of magic with him. 🤎✨

We have some VERY good Lazarus news. 💙

Lazarus has officially been adopted.

If you know Lazarus, you know this wasn’t necessarily something we expected to announce. Because of his chronic medical needs, Lazarus has been one of our sanctuary bunnies, meaning our promise was that he could stay in our care for however long he needed us, even if that meant the rest of his life.

But we always said that if the right person came along, someone who truly understood his medical needs and was ready to care for him through all of it, we would happily let him have a forever home of his own.

Turns out, the right people were already his foster family. 🥹

Lazarus’s sanctuary foster is also our Wellness Coordinator, so he has been in VERY capable hands. But somewhere along the way, her daughter fell especially hard for him.

She found her soul bunny in Lazarus.

Even now that she’s away at college, the Lazarus questions continue: Did he take his meds? Is he eating? Is he p**ping? How is he doing? And, obviously, please send pictures.

After talking it over as a family, they decided Lazarus wasn’t just a bunny they were fostering anymore.

He was theirs.

So our little sanctuary bun gets to stay exactly where he already feels at home, with a family that knows his medical history, his quirks, his needs, and everything that comes with loving him for however much time he has ahead.

And after the week we’ve had, we REALLY needed some happy news like this. 💙

Don’t worry, Lazarus Fan Club. Adoption does not mean retirement from public life.

He’ll still be making regular appearances at the Center, including THIS WEEKEND! Come congratulate our newly adopted celebrity, take a picture, and maybe even request an autograph.

We’ve been told fame won’t change him.

We have our doubts....🤣

This week has been… very bunny.

A rescued mama surprised us with SEVEN babies.

Then Sirius arrived with a badly broken leg, had surgery, and is thankfully doing great.

Then Sirius’ mom and dad were found too, so Stardust and Pluto joined us.

Last night, another mama arrived with her baby. Sadly, her little one passed away shortly afterward, and mama is now safe with us.

And this morning, two more bunnies came in. One was found wandering the street with ear mites. The other was found in a park malnourished, dehydrated and also dealing with ear mites.

So our center is suddenly doing a lot of recovery, monitoring and bunny juggling.

And this is where foster homes can make a HUGE difference.

We’re not asking new fosters to take on these brand-new medical cases. What we need are homes for some of the stable, wonderful bunnies already living at our center.

When one of those bunnies heads into foster, their center space opens up for a newer arrival who needs closer care.

Basically, one foster home can help two bunnies at once.

And we make fostering pretty easy.

We provide the pen, hay, litter, supplies and support. If you travel, we can provide boarding for your foster bunny too.

You provide a safe indoor spot and a little love while they wait for adoption.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is a really meaningful time to try it.

And if fostering isn’t possible, sharing this post helps us reach the person who can.

Yesterday, one of our volunteers went to pick up a bunny who had been found outside at an empty home, living in a dog enclosure.

Almost immediately, she noticed something strange about his right back leg.

It wasn't really moving with the rest of him.

It was just hanging there.

We knew something was wrong, but before we had answers, the first thing Sirius needed was to get clean and comfortable. His entire underside was heavily matted from urine, and the fur along his back was urine-soaked too, so we carefully trimmed away what we could.

And while we were doing that, Sirius kept giving us little licks.

At the time, it was just very sweet.

He was eating his pellets, working on his hay, drinking water and calmly accepting all of this attention from people he had only just met.

Then today, we saw his X-rays.

His entire right leg is badly broken.

His left heel is broken too.

Suddenly, those little kisses from yesterday felt very different.

We knew Sirius was hurt. We did not realize just how badly he was hurt.

This little bunny was sitting there with two serious injuries, quietly eating his dinner and licking the hands trimming away the mats that had been pulling at his skin.

We don't know what happened to him or how long he has been living like this, and we don't want to fill in the parts we don't know with guesses.

What we do know is what happens next.

Tomorrow morning, Sirius will have his right leg amputated.

Until then, he is on plenty of pain medication and being watched very closely because the way that leg is broken carries a risk of causing further internal injury, including puncturing his abdomen.

That is the part we are trying not to think too hard about tonight.

Because if you looked over at Sirius right now, you would see a bunny eating hay, drinking water and wondering why everyone keeps checking on him.

He has no idea what his X-rays look like.

He has no idea why tomorrow is such a big day.

He just knows that when he is hungry, there is food. When he needs medicine, someone gives it to him. When something is uncomfortable, someone notices.

And tonight, he gets to sleep somewhere safe.

We named him Sirius after the brightest star in the night sky because after everything that came before, we wanted his name to point toward where we hope he is going.

Somewhere brighter.

Right now, we could really use your help getting him there.

This has been one of the heaviest stretches of medical cases we have had in quite some time. We are already beyond capacity, and we have now learned there may be another bunny at the same home who needs help too.

It’s National Dog Day, and yes, we know. We are a rabbit rescue. 😂

But we would like to nominate Cadbury as an honorary dog.

Cadbury has what we can only describe as big puppy energy. He is always looking for something to do, someone to hang out with, a puzzle to solve, or a new corner of the room to investigate. We have had so many visitors meet him and immediately say, “He’s like a puppy!”

And… they’re not wrong.

Big REW buns like Cadbury are some of the most underrated rabbits out there. Every bunny is their own little person, of course, but these big white buns have a reputation around here for being ridiculously friendly, curious, social, and very involved in whatever the humans are doing.

Basically: puppy personality, bunny maintenance.

No standing outside in the rain at 6 a.m. waiting for someone to pick the perfect potty spot. Cadbury would much rather stay inside, eat a snack, supervise the neighborhood from a sunny window, and use his litter box with a level of accuracy that we would currently describe as aspirational. 😂 We’re working on it, okay?

His one puppy-like requirement? Entertainment. Lots of it.

Cadbury LOVES puzzles, snuffle mats, tunnels, toys, treat games, and basically anything that gives his busy little brain a job to do. So in honor of National Dog Day, if you would like to spoil our resident honorary puppy, we would happily accept enrichment toys and activities for Cadbury and his friends.

Bonus points if it keeps him busy long enough for our volunteers to get something done. 🐰🎩

We LOVE getting updates on our adopted buns, but this one comes with a little HRR family-tree update. 🥹🐰💕

Meet Pancake & Waffles! You might recognize one half of this very in-love couple as Evee, the mama bun we rescued two Easters ago along with her babies and her then-husbun, Scorbunny.

Since then, life has taken both of them in some pretty adorable directions. 💍

Scorbunny, now Lumi, has found love again with his bunwife Rory. You may even spot the two of them stopping by the Hare Salon together like the very established married couple they are.

And Evee? She has also remarried, and her new husbun is, by all reports, completely and hopelessly obsessed with her. As he should be. 😂

Honestly, this is the kind of happily-ever-after we live for. Sometimes bunny relationships change, life changes, and then one day we get a photo of them snuggled up with the bun who turned out to be their perfect match.

And if your bunny is currently accepting applications for a spouse, we can help with that too. 👀

When you adopt a bond mate for your bunny through HRR, we start with bunny speed dating so your bun gets a say in who they click with. Once there seems to be a promising match, we encourage adopters to continue the bonding process at home with our support.

But if you get home and decide, “Actually… I would like the professionals to handle the romance,” we’ve got you. 😂 Bonding is complimentary for HRR adopters, and we can take over the process with lots of patience, supervision and care.

Because sometimes finding the right bunny is the easy part. Making it official just takes a little matchmaking help. 💕

BREAKING: Samwise has discovered indoor plumbing.

Unfortunately, he does not understand its intended purpose.

He has instead determined that the bathtub is a giant bunny bed and would like everyone to respect his interior design choices.

Honestly, considering where Sam started, we’re pretty thrilled that this is what he’s worrying about these days.

Sam came to us with severe maggot-filled wounds around his rear end that required surgery and a lot of medical care. He was in really rough shape, and we knew his recovery wouldn’t happen overnight.

Fast forward to now and Sam is healing beautifully, eating like a champ, working on potty training, requesting plenty of pets, and inserting himself into absolutely everything his foster dad is doing.

His foster dad originally tried giving him a nice pen in his office.

Sam repeatedly jumped out of it.

His foster dad put him back.

Sam jumped out again.

Eventually, his foster dad realized that Sam had apparently already decided the entire office was his pen and gave up. So congratulations to Samwise on his recent promotion to free-roaming office supervisor.

His foster has also been helping him with something a little less visible: learning that food is dependable.

Sam initially behaved like he needed to eat everything immediately because there might not be another meal coming. So they created a consistent routine for him.

Breakfast. Dinner. Unlimited hay. Repeat.

Slowly, Sam is figuring out that meals aren’t rare anymore. He doesn’t have to prepare for the possibility that this one might be his last.

We’re keeping him on medical hold just a little longer because of how severe his original condition was, but if he keeps progressing like this, Samwise will soon be ready for his next great adventure:

Finding a forever home where breakfast is guaranteed, the office is negotiable, and the bathtub is apparently included in the floor plan. 😂🐰

We had plans.

Ruby, Eden & Lily had other plans.

These three sisters have decided that after everything they've been through together, they would very much like to stay together. And judging by this photo, occasionally become one giant three-headed bunny.

They were all spayed at our HOP-eration Fix-a-Bun event two Saturdays ago and are now recovering, working on their potty-training skills, and looking for a foster home willing to take on the whole girl gang.

Three bunnies sounds like a lot until you realize they entertain each other, nap together, eat together and apparently share custody of the same food bowl.

Two Saturdays ago, Moonbeam went in for what was supposed to be a routine spay.

The veterinary team found this. 😳

What started as a normal surgery for one of our foster bunnies turned into the discovery of a HUGE fluid-filled cyst associated with Moonbeam’s reproductive tract.

And when we say huge... we mean huge.

Moonbeam was one of the foster buns who joined us for HOP-eration Fix-a-Bun that day, and her case became one of those reminders of why spaying female rabbits is about so much more than preventing babies.

Rabbits are incredibly good at hiding when something is wrong. Reproductive changes can be developing inside a bunny long before there is an obvious sign on the outside. Sometimes, it isn’t until a spay that a veterinarian discovers what has quietly been happening inside.

The tissue was unusual enough that we are keeping Moonbeam on our radar and monitoring her closely for any changes. The reassuring part is that removing her uterus was already the most important first step, and so far, she is doing really well. 💛

For now, Moonbeam’s job is simple: eat hay, make excellent p**p piles, recover, and accept the level of spoiling she clearly deserves.

Her story is a pretty dramatic reminder that a spay can be so much more than “getting fixed.” Sometimes it means finding something before anyone even knew there was something to find.

Moonbeam went into surgery carrying something enormous that none of us could see. She came out without it, and with a whole team of people keeping an eye on what comes next.

For now, we’re choosing to celebrate the really important part:

it was found, it was removed, and Moonbeam is here doing well. 🌙🐰
