Low-clearance (near-grade) continue to be one of the most common topics we get asked about.
The biggest misconception? That any board can be installed just a few inches above the ground.
The reality is that near-grade decks require a different approach. Material selection, drainage, ventilation, and substructure design all play a critical role in long-term performance.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
• Choose decking materials that are suitable for low-clearance applications.
• Ensure the ground is stable and properly prepared.
• Plan for positive drainage—standing water is never your friend.
• Maintain as much ventilation as possible beneath the deck.
• Use a substructure designed to withstand exposure.
• Think long-term: durability is determined by the entire system, not just the deck boards, no matter how good they look.
Whether you'’e considering wood or composite decking, not every product is designed to perform well in near-grade conditions.
Check it out, and if you're’planning a near-grade project, we'd ’e happy to help you choose the right solution. That’s why we work with some of the best in this industry: to get it right.

Think building a premium deck requires decades of experience? Think again.
This deck in Aspen, CO in collaboration with Connect One Design was built by The Farm Collaborative using MOSO Bamboo North America with Grad System on pedestals—completed in just a few days.
Grad Concept USA ‘s technology simplifies installation, eliminates visible fasteners, and delivers precise alignment every time. We supplied a layout drawing that shows where our products go to make sure everyone knows what to expect. The result is a beautiful, durable deck that’s faster to build and easier to maintain.
