"A really, really good hair day is an ever more expensive proposition for salon customers.⁠

The consumer-price index shows haircuts and other personal care services have risen in price over 27% from 2019 to 2024. In the salon, prices are going up even more.⁠

High-end salon prices across the country vary. In big cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, owners and customers say it’s no longer unusual for a cut and color to exceed $500—a price once paid by only the biggest spenders.⁠

In New York, the average price for balayage, when stylists add color by handpainting parts of the hair, is $289 in 2024, compared with $168 in 2021, according to data from Booksy, a services booking platform. That’s partly because salons are passing on the higher costs of staff wages and hair products down to customers. In-demand stylists are finding that customers are willing to pay whatever they charge.⁠

Some salons or stylists are adding $20 or more for formerly free services like blow-drying or styling, and charging last-minute no-shows. Others are upping prices for complex color jobs that can take three hours to complete and offering optional conditioning treatments for a fee.⁠

Many of these salons regularly charge high prices for complex looks trending on social media, says Yarden Horwitz, co-founder of Spate, a trends forecasting platform specializing in beauty. The “expensive brunette” look that shows off glossy hair and long waves or an “old-money blonde” that requires hand-painted highlights could each run $400 or more.⁠"

Rarely do i have a day i don’t love going to work. Rarely do i let anyone ruin my day. Occasionally, it may happen. My days are more than doing hair. It has become a storybook of happy times, sad times, and most of all thankful times! I’m so thankful for each and everyone of you who understands that your time with me is more than “just hair”. ❤️

10 years ago when I got serious about this issue, I rarely have this problem anymore. I understand things happen and things come up, but I also understand some people abuse my kindness, and it’s not OK to miss an appointment. I actually missed an appointment through a misunderstanding with my girl that does my hair and I paid her for that time it’s just not right and unless it’s a family emergency or a death there’s really no excuse. I am very blessed with amazing clients whom I’ve developed a close relationship through the years who respect my time because it’s how i feed my family and pay my bills. Thank you ALL for always understanding ❤️i try my best to always let you know when I’m running a little off schedule too in respect for your time as well!

A change is good! Even if the change is me, i just want you to know i still wonder about how you are doing. The bond we form is real and genuine no matter how long we’ve known each other. Please don’t ever feel like you can’t tell me you needed a change! It’s ok! I’ll still love you and cherish the time we shared together forever 🥰
