American Red Cross of Alabama

Comments

The Red Cross of Alabama is either uninformed or incompetent. In January 2020 the FDA issued guidlines rescinding the prohibition of blood donation by military members who were serving their country in Europe during the 1980s. On April 2, 2020, the FDA published a letter to that effect. Today, April 18 I drove 25 miles to donate blood in the midst of the national blood shortage. I was told by the person in charge that the RedCross is unaware of the new guidelines and I as well as my wife and two sons will not be allowed to donate blood. I do not know about elsewhere but the Red Cross of Alabama is, as I said, uninformed and incompetent.
Y'all want to increase blood donations? Give a free coronavirus test, on site, with each donation.
I arrived for my donation appointment in Gadsden today. There were no Red Cross representatives on site, no signage, no email possibly informing me of cancellation or postponement and the facility was closed. You’re begging for blood and then you’re a “no show” ! So much for your “needs” .
In response to your many pleas for blood donations I signed up earlier this week and was given an appointment for 11:45 this morning at the Gadsden Public Library. Not only was there no donation facility set up but the Library was closed. I had to tap on a window from the shrubbery outside yo get a library employee to come to the window. She knew nothing about any blood drive. I phoned the local office and the call was not answered but rolled over to the Huntsville, AL office. The person there knew nothing about any blood collection in Gadsden and didn’t even care enough to ask me my name. He said “the system must have messed it up.”
Your organization, for which my mother volunteered for 50 years, should be ashamed of advertising its dire need for blood if it can’t even make and honor an appointment for a donor.
I have O positive blood and I would like to donate for the young lady that I saw on the news last night. Her name was Lydia Langford. Where do I go?
Thank you Alabama Red Cross for your support of my brother and his family yesterday after a devastating home fire! It is great to see the work of this wonderful organization in action. I am proud to work with all of you!
☺️
Giving a little support! East Alabama Rocks!
Hello, I would love to donate blood. But I'm born and raised in Germany since 1988. Why can't I donate blood? I'm in the US now. So can nobody in the US donate blood?
My blood could save lives but you don't want it. I'm upset.
Keep my 3 sisters in prayer as they head out with Red Cross to Arkansas. They are a little nervous this is Barbara Hudson Casterlin & Gloria Jean Hudson Gschwender first deployment without me and Pattie Lynn Hudson Taylor first ever! I would have been out that way already if life had allowed.
Do good works girls and represent East Alabama Chapter proudly! I have trained y’all the best I can. Love y’all.
Gods got this, it’s all part of the plan!
Alabama Red Cross your donation sites are a joke, I now understand why I always choose to use LifeSouth for all my blood donations, had an appointment to donate at 11 and wait an hour and still not able to get to donate, filled out your fast pass registration got there early and told them I was on my lunch hour. Had to leave with no donation made guess I will look for Lifesouth this weekend to make my normal donation. Will not ever try Red Cross again.

In nice weather, you may be tempted to bring your pet along while you run errands thinking they may enjoy the ride.

Unless they're going in with you, or someone is staying in the car with them, DON'T!

When you park your car, the temperature inside can quickly reach 120 degrees even if you park in the shade. Remember, if it's too hot for you it's too hot for them!

Emergency Services
When disasters, large or small, strike, the American Red Cross provides shelter, food and health services to individuals and families who are affected. From care for hurricane evacuees to providing home cleanup kits to tornado victims, the Mid Alabama Region is here to help. The DAT (Disaster Action Team) volunteer program responds to the scene of disaster to assist people in crisis.

Preparedness and Health and Safety Services
Every year, the American Red Cross prepares millions of people to save lives through health and safety training. Our training programs include First Aid, CPR and AED, aquatics and water safety, swimming lessons, HIV/AIDS prevention and education, and care giving programs. The Red Cross is committed to keeping people safe at home, at school, and in the workplace by teaching people not only how to respond to emergencies, but also how to prevent them.
Our service delivery options include on-site training, as well as regularly scheduled programs that take place at Red Cross locations.

Service to Armed Forces
Both active duty and community-based military can count on the American Red Cross to provide emergency communications that link them with their families back home, access to financial assistance, counseling and assistance to veterans. Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces personnel work in 756 chapters in the United States, on 58 military installations around the world and with our troops overseas.

Project SHARE
Project SHARE provides emergency assistance to our elderly and disabled neighbors who need help with their energy bills. Clients in need apply for Project SHARE assistance with the American Red Cross office in their county. Project SHARE is administered by the American Red Cross and is funded by utility customers who donate through their monthly bills.

Community Education
The best way to make your family and your home safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes. You can reduce the social and economic costs of any disaster by taking proactive steps to reduce your vulnerability.
Be Red Cross Ready: Get a Kit. Make A Plan. Be Informed.

Please click HERE for more information on Community Education classes in your area.

International Services
International Services initiatives focus on primary health care, emergency response and preparedness, restoring family links, and the dissemination of international humanitarian law.

Volunteer Services
American Red Cross volunteers provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Your local Red Cross chapter can work with you to provide rewarding experiences, whatever your schedule. We need people with all kinds of different backgrounds, talents and skill levels. And, if you need training, we’ll provide it.

Blood Services
American Red Cross Biomedical Services plays a critical role in our nation’s health care system. It is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States, collecting and processing more than 40 percent of the blood supply and distributing it to some 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. The Red Cross also plays a leading role in protecting the safety of donors and patients and increasing the availability of blood. It has been among the first to help develop and implement testing for infectious diseases and is frequently the single major contributor to clinical trials to improve blood safety. Providing life-saving blood and blood products to patients is a key component of the Red Cross mission to help people in times of emergency and disasters.

General information

Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement: Humanity The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on their battlefield endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among all peoples. Impartiality It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress. Neutrality In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature. Independence The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement. Voluntary Service It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain. Unity There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory. Universality The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
