Nena Graham, who was a member of your church for many years, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020. Arrangements have not been made due to the holiday. We will be making the arrangements on Monday at 2:00pm at Crestview Funeral Home..

Sister Nena Graham passed away this afternoon. Arrangements haven’t been made yet but the body will be at Crestview. I know many of you know Nena and ask about her.

I called the Bruno Cancer Center, where I go, yesterday to see if they will receive fabric masks. I just got a call back saying that my Oncologist, Dr. Bondly, has given the okay. I am so excited to be able to give-back to them. They are in great need. So many patients sit in the waiting room and in the cancer bays receiving treatments with no protection.

I will also take masks for children to Children’s Hospital of Alabama if you choose to make some of those. Both are needed.

Please, if any of you can make some, let me know. This is a wonderful service project. When you get them made, you can mail them to me…OR….if you are local to Moody or Margaret, you can do a porch drop-off OR we can plan a “safe” meet-up. I will handle getting them delivered to them.

There are a lot of patterns on YouTube. I have included two below. One uses the elastic and one uses the fabric ties. You can also substitute fabric ties for ribbon or t-shirt strips. If you use ribbon, please sew, singe, or use fray stop so that the ribbons will hold up. If you use tshirt strips…please give them a finished look. The reason I am offering alternative ideas to the elastic is because it is currently difficult to get. Receiving orders are being delayed because of the great demand.

SOME WHO DO NOT HAVE A SEWING MACHINE ARE PURCHASING THE WIDE FABRIC HEADBANDS FROM AMAZON AND ARE ADDING BUTTONS TO EACH SIDE OF THE HEADBAND. THIS IS TO GIVE REPRIEVE FROM BREAKDOWN OF TISSUE ON USERS EARS.

ALSO, THESE CAN BE MADE BY HAND-SEWING. THE STITCHES MUST BE CLOSE TOGETHER SO THEY CAN BE CLEANED WITHOUT BEING FRAGILE.

There are also adaptations that can be made for adding covered wire strips….such as twist ties and pipe cleaners….to make the nose space more fitted.

In addition: If you want to add filters OR leave an opening for filters….this can also be done. One idea for a filter is removing wire and card-board frame from an air-conditioner filter, then, cutting small pieces that can be placed inside the fabric mask for extra protection.

You can also take any stretch material you might have and make the headbands….for instance….use t-shirts as they are great for making headbands. Here is a visual for making headbands:
