Amanda is a pro at treating infants for torticollis and plagiocephaly! Check out this perfect stretch while Baby Luke sleeps. Who ever said stretching had to be painful?
Family is everything! This grandfather/granddaughter duo love to come to their therapy sessions together. Even with completely different diagnoses, it is fun to pair some of their exercises so that they can work together and motivate each other in the clinic as well as at home!
We love functional exercise training here at Homewood East, so we did the "Bring Sally Up" exercise challenge today with KJ on pushups and Alex on squats. We are impressed by them both!
How do you know if you are ready to discharge from physical therapy after ankle surgery? Beat your own therapist at an ankle stability challenge.
Our PD Support Group had the opportunity to hear from 2 time golden glove winner Martin Juarez this weekend about his program, PD Fight Club. He utilizes boxing combined with Parkinson's specific training to help his fighters battle against Parkinson's Disease. His program is incredible, and our group was so blessed to be able to learn from him. If you or someone you love is interested in trying out his program, please reach out to Morgan at our clinic and she will get you in touch with Martin!
Can you guess which oxymorons our therapists dressed up as for Halloween? We had fun watching our patients try to figure out what our costumes meant. We already can't wait for next year!
Meet our Team Monday is back for an addition to the Homewood East family! Brandon Esleck graduated from University of South Alabama's DPT program in May. He is primarily interested in the orthopedic patient population but wants to continue building his skill set by working with the neurologic population here. He keeps himself busy working PRN in the hospital setting as well. Brandon is dry needling certified and desires to one day open his own clinic to help serve those need. We are excited to have him join us here at Homewood East!
Mia graduated after 3 months of working hard on her gait pattern. The video shows her first day, halfway point, and graduation day. We are so proud of her determination to get where she is today, and we can't wait to see where she goes from here.
Hollon loves to sing along to Frozen while she and Amanda work on improving her hip mobility and her single leg balance at the same time! She is already quite the multi-tasker.
Our Parkinson's Disease Movement Based Support Group was blessed by my pharmacist Shea Terry last weekend. She led a discussion on pharmacy and PD that answered all of our questions and set everyone at ease regarding managing medications and feeling in charge of Parkinson's Disease in yet another realm of their bodies! To keep us moving, we also practiced a flick progression that aids with tremor suppression that is easy to implement throughout each day. Please join us next month on November 6th for our next Movement Based Support Group for Parkinson's Disease, where Martin Juarez will come to discuss and practice PD Fight Club!
After a glioblastoma diagnosis, Art endured 30 days of radiation, 45 days of chemotherapy, and 30 days of physical therapy. The result? Life long joy after renewed strength and endurance is taking him on a week long vacation exploring the Mediterranean. We could not be more excited for Art as we say a bittersweet farewell to our patient and our friend!
Right now, the COVID clean, safe, and ready procedures are pretty stiff...but your joints don't have to be! Research shows that high velocity, low amplitude thrust techniques are safe, effective, and beneficial to improve range of motion, proprioception, and motor control. Come see us here at Homewood East to decrease your pain and improve your mobility.

GivingTuesday was created as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. This idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

When so much attention is given to what divides us, generosity brings people together across races, faiths, and political views. Through Upstream Pillars With Purpose and that same spirit of generosity, we have granted $230,056.13 to 68 different non-profits this year (and counting).

For #GivingTuesday, we invite you to join us in making a difference as we unite for a worldwide celebration of generosity.

Have you considered physical therapy as an option for treating headaches and migraines?

Headaches are often caused by a number of issues such as muscle tightness, sinus issues, concussions, motor vehicle accidents, or they may occur without a clear cause.

The two most common types of headaches we see from patients are:

Cervicogenic headaches - These often start from problems in the neck causing pain on only one side of the head, the back of the skull, or behind the eye.

Tension-type headaches - A dull and aching pain in the forehead area often caused by stress that radiates to the sides or back of the head.

The month of November is National Diabetes Month.

More than 34 million Americans currently live with diabetes, and the number of people diagnosed with the disease continues to increase each year.

Diabetes takes place when the pancreas has a hard time making enough insulin or the body cannot properly use the insulin it has produced. After you eat a meal, your body turns the food into glucose and your blood sugar rises. The pancreas is then alerted to produce insulin, a hormone that turns the glucose into energy for your cells to use.

Having too much glucose in the body can cause a variety of detrimental health issues while also negatively affecting your body's capability to heal wounds.

How does physical therapy help with wound care?

Physical therapists have in-depth knowledge of anatomy and tissue healing, as well as mobility and positioning expertise. Specially trained physical therapists provide wound care, utilizing the most current and advanced wound care protocols.

Physical therapy wound care is for patients who have open wounds as a result of pressure, vascular insufficiency, trauma, surgery, and/or diabetes. All wounds heal at different rates and treatment is directed at the individual’s needs.
