"State-of-the-art ears…with the experience of years"

As freelancers, every so often, we are blessed to work on extraordinary projects…the kind that transcend your professional life and burrow deep into your psyche. "Superpower Dogs" was one such project, an outstanding IMAX documentary about life-saving service dogs directed with a steady and good-natured hand by Daniel Ferguson and featuring the magnificent cinematography of Reed Smoot and an awesome crew of hand-picked super-powered professionals. I was truly honored to work amongst them, even if only for parts of their years-long, globe spanning project.
Now, after more than three years working on the project – and that's just my part –, "Superpower Dogs" is finished and being shown in glorious IMAX 3D at select theaters around the country and internationally (see superpowerdogs.com for locations).
Last weekend, I had the great pleasure of attending the South Florida premier at the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Ft. Lauderdale. It was a mind-blowing experience! The movie was so well put together, technically and story-wise, rocking the theater's six-story screen and 114 finely tuned IMAX Sound speakers. It looked and sounded (he said proudly) just incredible! Thank you, Museum of Discovery and Science for having me join you at the event.
This movie is an inspirational must see for all ages -- I know you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Here's a pic from after the screening with two of the movie's hero/stars, Halo and Cat Labrada, Halo's human partner.

A wonderful, feel-good production shoot—great talent and crew!—turned into a wonderful, feel-good spot. Kudos to all involved. Being a piano player, I was particularly moved by what I witnessed that day. Projects like this should remind us that the work we do is not just about the professional fees.

Once every hundred years or so comes a project so wondrous, so memorable, that it's hard to fathom! I wish you all such a project. I just returned from mine covering a group of enthusiasts and scientists -- featuring the great astrophysicist Andrea Ghez -- observing the recent solar eclipse. Totality = awesomeness! Here are a few pics from Wyoming where I felt most privileged to be part of the "Einstein's Incredible Universe" IMAX project. and .

Sure, I like syncing and feeding cameras as much as the next (sound) guy, but there's a certain joy in audio-only recording projects…no camera hookups…no sync issues…no boom/mic in frame or throwing shadows…no clothing noise from hidden lav mics. Just roll, record, and revel in great sound. Love those days. Gimme more!

I don't usually go for that "my office for the day" thing, but when one is shooting on a 235' megayacht, one makes exceptions.

Why do we go through what we do to service our production clients? Sure, there's the money…but even more so, there are those rare, wonderful production days like yesterday's sunrise shoot in the Everglades -- courtesy of Scott Goldman and Polaroid University -- that remind us what an incredible industry we're in! It was shockingly cold zooming around on that airboat, but even that couldn't diminish a really sweet, enjoyable shoot!

I know, I know, we haven't had our first snowfall in South Florida…yet. But since so many of my clients are from frostier climes, I figured it was still appropriate to post this. Season's greetings, y'all!

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all! There's always much to be thankful for…so today, take time to recount it.
It's NEVER too late for a turkey with LEDs! Happy post-Thanksgiving and beyond!!

A word to all would-be boom ops out there…stay focused, you can be replaced! Some productions would bearly notice the difference!

I've been told that sometimes when I'm mixing I resemble a DJ. You think?!
