A dream come true: 20 mile trail run—and feeling strong enough to keep going.
In college, I ran 17-minute 5Ks while struggling with an eating disorder. I was fast, but I was not healthy, and eventually my body could no longer keep up.
For years afterward, I believed long-distance running simply wasn’t in the cards for me anymore.
Nearly 12 years of healing later—with one incredibly loving husband, two beautiful children, and a completely different approach to caring for my body—I am finding my way back to consistent running.
Not running at any cost, but a healthier kind of running that can exist alongside nourishment, love, family and peace.
Four things have especially helped me return to what I love:
1. Learning to receive love.
Noah has taught me that love is not something I have to earn through achievement, discipline or being useful. He has shown me what it feels like to be loved while resting, eating, struggling, healing and simply being myself.
Learning to receive his love has slowly taught me how to receive joy too—to notice the taste of good food, laugh without rushing past it, and fully enjoy snuggles of my children.
2. Consistently nourishing my body.
Healing does not come from one perfect meal or healthy week. It comes through consistently giving the body what it needs. For me, that means plenty of whole foods: meat, fruit, vegetables and mostly minimally processed carbohydrates.
3. Exceptional chiropractic care and consistent dry needling.
Noah’s care has helped my body recover from training and bring out the athletic potential that was still deep within me. The day after this run, dry needling drastically reduced my soreness, and I was able to run again the following day.
4. Fueling during my runs.
After almost 20 years of running, this is the first season I have consistently eaten while running. On runs longer than two hours, I work toward 75 grams or more of carbohydrates per hour, adjusted for effort and tolerance.
This 20-mile run was about so much more than distance.
It reminded me that healing can be slow, but the body is capable of incredible things when it is treated with nourishment, patience and love.

“I knew my big toe was holding me back.” 🦶

Research links stronger toe flexors with better balance and walking in older adults.

For runners, the big toe must bend, spread, stabilize, and push into the ground with every stride. When it cannot, the ankle, knee, hip, and back may join a group project they never volunteered for.

Chiropractic and dry needling may help improve foot and ankle movement and muscle function—followed by strengthening and motor control.

Whether you want to age well or run fast, do not underestimate the little piggy doing the pushing.

The Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen can be a helpful guide when choosing produce—but what you eat is only one part of supporting your body’s natural detox pathways. 🌿

Chiropractic care can support movement, circulation, deep breathing, relaxation, digestion, and lymphatic flow—helping your liver, kidneys, lungs, digestive system, and lymphatic system do their jobs efficiently.

Choose nourishing foods, wash your produce well, stay hydrated, move your body, and give your system the support it needs to function at its best.

A long run with threshold work isn't the time to "tough it out" on water alone—especially if you're breastfeeding.

Fuel early with at least 60g of carbs per hour, along with fluids and electrolytes. Good fueling helps you hold your pace, maintain workout quality, and recover for your next session.

Recovery is more than what you eat. Chiropractic care helps your body move efficiently, while dry needling can relieve stubborn muscle tension so you can keep training consistently—not just get through one workout.

The biggest fitness gains don't come from one perfect workout. They come from weeks and months of healthy, consistent training—and that consistency matters beyond your training plan. Taking care of your body means you have the energy, strength, and presence to show up for your family, not just your workouts.

Fuel well. Recover well. Keep moving forward—for you and for them. 💛

Recipe note: this is the minimum water to sugar ratio for stomach comfort, you may need more water. Also, salt content varies based on individual sweat rate and composition.
