The scariest rollercoaster for me…but I’ve enjoyed it

My 4 year old daughter and I were waiting in line for chocolate world tonight when this family came and completely jumped the line chains to but in front of us. I really cannot believe a family with children of their own would teach their children that acting this way is okay. My daughter and I have been waiting in line for close to 30 minutes when this happened. Trashy adulting.

Today was something special! Emmett independently dressed himself and only needed help with tying his shoes. Hershey's Chocolate World is one of Emmett’s highly preferred places to visit, and he was in a hurry to get on the road. It’s a solid 2 hour trip to get there. He jumped in the car, reached for my phone and chose Kasey Musgrave’s Silver Lining to start the drive. The two hours flew by as Emmett listened to his playlist hand picking each song as the current song playing was about to finish. Some of today’s selections included: The Blessing, Neon Sky, God’s Plan, Low, Lion and The Lamb, Chuck E’s Happy Dance, Control, Bad Habit’s & Glimpse of Us…a rather wide variety of music, inspired by a variety of people & places.

The closer we got to the destination, the more excited he became. Emmett arrived at 10 am. He went straight to the men’s restroom. It wasn’t too crowded, but it is a holiday week, so we got there early to avoid the big crowds. In the past, when there were large crowds, Emmett would load the ride at the accessible entrance, but when visiting on less crowded days, Emmett would walk through the regular line, because there was never a line. Today, I followed Emmett’s lead and he choose the regular line. He darted up the ramp. Not knowing what the crowd was like inside, I chose not to correct him and followed behind. There was a small line, but Emmett waited without incident. It was awesome.

He road the ride once and said “all done” and enjoyed his snack size Hershey bar on the way out. He walked by the life size house made entirely of Chocolate. He barely glanced over when directed and clearly was not impressed. He had a plan, and that plan included a stop in the men’s restroom located at the far end of the dining hall. He came out with hands freshly washed and was ready to walk around. He was compliant and stood for a few photos. But when told to pick out some candy, he lit up. The pride filled grin that covered his face while carrying his selection only grew bigger when he was handed his bag at the register. When Emmett was asked to take a photo as we exited, he ran to the statue and turned around beaming. We have caught many a smile from Emmett, but this was a boy who was so HERSHEY HAPPY to stand next to his friends.

For many of us, we look at a statue of characters as an inanimate object. Emmett looks at most people as inanimate objects. He only has a few that know him well enough, that he is comfortable and lets his guard down to engage in a caring reciprocal way. For everyone else…who knows what you’ll get. But after years of day trips and watching videos and seeing photos, today wasn’t a day trip just to pass the time for Emmett. He went to see his friends, at their house, and he enjoyed every second of it!

At 10:47, only 47 minutes after we pulled into our parking spot, we were walking out the door and back to the car for the 2 hour drive back home. Emmett played on his phone with one arm out the window the entire way, while mom listened to the soundtrack of Oklahoma! on repeat, in preparation for the upcoming Spring musical she’ll be working on at our local high school.

Today’s success was not an accident. We didn’t get lucky. We simply reached the top of one of the mountains we have been pushing a boulder up for many years. We went to a familiar place, to work on unpredictable circumstances. Our longtime followers may vaguely remember some of the HERSHEY HELL posts of the past.

Sometimes we would leave wondering why on earth we would put Emmett and ourselves through the nightmare again and again. It surely would have been much easier to never go back. But had we not kept trying, we would have never seen how happy Emmett is to be with HIS friends! And that made every single one of those 166 miles traveled, for 47 minutes…10 that were spent in restrooms…worth it!
