Any excuse for Pie! Pi Day is a celebration of the mathematical sign pi. The numbering sequence of 3.14 represents the first three digits of pi, and it also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday!

Lots of smiles this morning enjoying the Breakfast-To-Go here at the Icon at Dulles. We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!

One of our favorite quotes by one of the world's most remarkable women. Words to live by.

D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood has been home to many prominent African Americans including jazz legend Duke Ellington, whose statue now resides in front of the historic Howard Theatre. You can also walk the theater's Walk of Fame, which begins near the United Negro College Fund Headquarters and continues for two blocks, right up to the facade of the theater.
The surrounding neighborhood earned the nickname “The Heart of Chocolate City” as escaped enslaved persons settled there and eventually started businesses catering to the large population of African Americans.

Located just around the corner from the Dr. Carter G. Woodson National Historic Site, the African American Civil War Memorial and African American Civil War Museum honor the heroic role of 209,145 African-American U.S. troops in ending slavery and keeping America united under one flag. The Museum uses a rich collection of artifacts, documents, primary sources, and technology to create a meaningful learning experience for families, students, Civil War enthusiasts, and historians about the period from the American Civil War to Civil Rights and beyond.

In 1963, civil rights leaders A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin began plans for a march on Washington to protest segregation, the lack of voting rights, and unemployment among African Americans. Randolph and Rustin enlisted the support of all the major civil rights organizations, and the march—on August 28— was a resounding success. The March on Washington sought to pressure Congress to pass civil rights legislation. Many public officials feared that the march would result in violence and proposed a bill in Congress to prevent it. Despite predictions of trouble, an in*******al crowd of 250,000 gathered without any violence and listened to speakers including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Around the corner from where he stood to speak, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial today honors his legacy and the struggle for freedom, equality, and justice. A prominent leader in the modern civil rights movement, Dr. King was a tireless advocate for racial equality, working class, and the oppressed around the world.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson is considered "The Father of African American History." Before Dr. Woodson, there was very little accurate written history about the lives and experiences of Americans of African descent. In 1915, Dr. Woodson founded Association for the Study of African American Life (ASALH) and History and established Negro History Week in 1926, which we celebrate today as Black History Month. His home, which also served as the headquarters for the ASALH, is now a National Historic Site located right here in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The site is temporarily closed due to a full renovation project, but plans to reopen for tours in the spring.
