The Sun is beaming down on us way more than what we have been used to, people are wearing lesser clothing, and we are starting to hear the phrase “bikini body” said way too much… Summertime is here.

Summer is an exciting time for many people, but the people in eating disorder recovery are not always feeling the same levels of excitement.

As June is Pride Month, it's very important that we shed some light on the eating disorder statistics among the LGBTQ+ community! 🌈

Research shows that, beginning as early as 12, gay, le***an, and bis*xual teens may be at higher risk of binge-eating and purging than heteros*xual peers. Please understand that eating disorders don't discriminate! Eating disorders affect all s*xual orientations, genders, ages, races, ethnicities, and body shapes/sizes. Studies have shown that eating disorders disproportionately impact some segments of the LGBTQ+ community.

Potential factors that may play a role in the development of an eating disorder may include:

💜 Fear of rejection or experience of rejections by friends, family, and co-workers
❤️ Internalized negative messages/beliefs about oneself due to s*xual orientation, non-normative gender expressions, or transgender identity
🧡 Experiences of violence and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which research shows sharply increases vulnerability to an eating disorder
💙 Discrimination due to one’s s*xual orientation and/or gender identity
💚 Being a victim of bullying due to one’s s*xual orientation and/or gender identity
💛 Discordance between one’s biological s*x and gender identity

You're still allowed to eat even if you've been lounging around all day, if you had a large dinner with your loved ones last night, if you are craving something badly.. you're ALWAYS allowed to eat! 💜

Just remember, always be kind to yourself and listen to your body! (& your mind) If you want to eat another piece of pizza... go for it! If you want to snack in bed even though you haven't left your bed all day... GO FOR IT! Feed your body, it needs food to fuel your mind! ✨

Double tap if you agree with us!

Myth or Fact? Males don't have eating disorders.

MYTH! The assumption that males don't have eating disorders may lead to missed or late diagnoses. Eating disorders among males are nearly as common as they are among females.

It's important to remember that eating disorders DON'T discriminate! Due to stigma and feelings of shame, men may deny their symptoms and hesitate to seek treatment. In order to meaningfully address the issue, it’s important to recognize the particular impacts that eating disorders can have on men, identify who is high risk, and find treatment options.

A reminder this Thanksgiving 💜 Just because something is normal in the prominent culture doesn’t mean it has to be normal for you. We can teach ourselves and our kids to name diet culture and call it out when it rears its head. Our team at Prosperity Eating Disorders and Wellness made handy little bingo cards with a list of recovery tools and reframes to help our community this holiday. As we play bingo, we’ll work together to normalize gratitude, connection, memory making and enjoyment of food while calling out the culture of food and body shaming that tends to have a major uptick this time of year. As we play bingo together while apart, we hope members of our community will feel less alone as they swim upstream. Whether it’s from friends, family or media (I can already hear you, Al & Hoda) we’ll be filling our cards to emphasize that statements and behaviors we’re exposed to have nothing to do with us or our bodies, are highly predictable as they’re products of projected insecurities, and are culturally normative and experienced by pretty much everyone. We may not be able to cancel the noise, but we can choose how we respond to it, whether or not we choose to engage in it, and how we take care of our bodies mentally and physically.

So as a reminder:

✅ Help cancel the noise by Not commenting on body size or changes. Any person would much rather hear how a color brings out their eyes, or that their shoes are fabulous. And have you ever met a person whose weight has changed and they’re not aware of it? Nope. Help them feel seen for something other than their body.
✅ Just because no one else is having breakfast doesn’t mean you should skip it.
✅ No one has to “trot” to eat tomorrow or any day. Food fuels life. Life is short. Move your body for the joy of it, not for earning or to pay penance.
✅ Everyone’s needs are different. Focus on your own plate & don’t comment on the portions of others. Yes, that also means a kid’s plate - parents, give them them the ultimate gift of body trust & trust their bodies to know what they need. Even if it’s just buttered rolls tomorrow. And the next day.
✅ No one cares about your diet or wellness journey aside from food allergies. Seriously, no one wants to hear how many points are in stuffing or which foods give you “mental fog”. You know what works for you so eat that food and move on. The healthiest lifestyles are personal and not topics of ongoing discussion.
✅ Cherish the people at your table, even if their statements are racking up your bingo points. Food is more than nutrition. It’s connection, culture, memory making and sometimes just yummy and fun.
✅ Watch the dog show. It’s hilarious & a good reminder that bodies of animals come in all shapes and sizes. We are animals. Debatably smart ones but animals full of variation and complexities all the while.

Happy Thanksgiving! Here is our reminder to you that you don't need to feel guilty for enjoying your favorite foods today, or any day! You are allowed to eat the foods that you enjoy, whether it be stuffing, apple pie, loaded baked potatoes, or whatever it is that you enjoy most!

For those who celebrate, Thanksgiving is arguably one of the most food-focused holidays. This is exciting to some people, but very scary for many others! These struggles and increased anxiety revolving around Thanksgiving can be tough to manage for people. Here are a few tips to help anyone struggling with their relationship with food or suffering from an eating disorder this Thanksgiving.

Reminder: Someone does not have to be "underweight" to suffer from an eating disorder. Eating disorders affect people of all ranges of weight, body types, body shapes, ages, gender, s*xual orientation, ethnicities, etc. Being "underweight" is not an eating disorder criteria.

5 reasons why we should never comment on other people's bodies:

💜 Their body isn't your business.
💜 Unless you're telepathic (which, let's face it, is unlikely), you don't know someone's life history.
💜 It perpetuates an emphasis on physical appearance and that an "ideal" body type exists.
💜 It's truthfully NONE of your business!
💜 There are SO MANY OTHER THINGS to focus on!

Commenting on another person's physical looks, whether that's weight, height or appearance, can be damaging to their self-esteem. Although these comments are not always meant to be harmful, they are not necessary and can do more harm than good.
