My ten(!) favorite aurora photos from last night here in Lofoten. What a fantastic send off to a week in a truly special place. One more 50-50 shot at the lights tonight before an early flight to Oslo and then back home. Can't wait to see more of this amazing country in Autumn...

Left a snowstorm in Reine on one side of the tunnel, came out to clear skies and this in front of me. I've seen the aurora quite a few times now, but this one was truly special. Here's hoping I haven't used up all my luck... 5 nights left!

After a full day of travel and an amazing fish soup dinner at my hotel in Leknes, I'm all settled in on Lofoten. I haven't even seen this place in daylight yet, but of course that wasn't going to stop me from scoping out the aurora. Sure enough, despite the poor weather forecast, the entire sky was dancing until the clouds moved in for good. Oh, and it is COLD. The last minute purchase of a balaclava and some microspikes is proving to be a good decision.

Ever since seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland in 2013, I've been completely captivated by the spectacle. That's one of the main reasons I'm travelling to Norway in March (along with the hope of snowy landscapes)! The aurora is anecdotally at its most active around the spring and autumnal equinoxes (March 20th and Sept 22nd), and the stars have aligned to allow me be in Northern Norway on both dates this year. Here's hoping for clear skies and some solar winds, and in the mean time, here are my greatest hits from Iceland.

DC Sunrise || Tidal Basin, Washington, DC
Getting some last minute shots in before I head off to Norway next week for a 10-day photography holiday. This morning's sunrise at the Tidal Basin was both frigid and peaceful as today's marathon downtown was only just getting set up.

This morning's sunrise over the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah NP from a new spot for me... atop the Appalachian Mountains in George Washington National Forest. Even better, I shot this from the deck of our Airbnb and got to enjoy the incredible view with my wife, 10 year old pup and 9 month old son. I'm counting down the days until I head to Norway's Lofoten Islands for 10 days of solo shooting the aurora and the amazing landscapes, so look for lots of shots in the coming weeks as well as a little something new... drone footage :o

Andalusian Sunrise || Grazalema, Spain
A gorgeous view from the beautiful town of Grazalema, one of the famous White Towns of Andalusia (Pueblos Blancos). Most of the stunning, and tiny, towns are set inside Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, a beautiful mountainous region full of great hiking and fantastic food. To be fair, everywhere in Spain has amazing food, but the incredible views made everyone about this visit maravilloso!

Mælifell Mountain, West Iceland. One of my favorite shots from Iceland, but not because of the typical things you associate with the island like a crazy behind-the-waterfall shot or a double moonbow beneath the northern lights. Instead, the massive scale of the dormant volcano is put into scale by the tiny farmhouse beneath it and the impressive 260 ft high Bjarnarfoss waterfall dropping partway down the side. Further realizing this was shot over 2 miles away from the mountain among its moss covered lava flows helps set the scene. And those green patches down the mountain under the waterfall? Well that's this particular landowner's attempt at re-introducing a forest to the island after the Vikings cut them all down over 1,000 years ago. Pretty cool, right?

Thornton Hollow Overlook || Shenandoah National Park, VA

Heraclitus may have said "no man ever steps in the same river twice," but he might as well have been talking about sunrises at Shenandoah. I set out this morning to capture some moody blue hues and was treated to a moody hue of just about every color in the palette. The deep magenta and purple color of the clouds just before sunrise made for an amazing backdrop over the barren mountains.

The winter blues are for real, but that doesn't mean some gorgeous landscapes can't be found to brighten your mood. I found this gorgeous scene unfolding in a field outside of Garmisch on a Christmas trip to Bavaria. There's nothing quite like a frigid run up an unfamiliar snow-covered pasture in late December to get your blood moving. Clouds + Northern Lights = Amazingly eerie seen over Kirkjufell on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula. After 3 trips to Iceland in 3 years, I can't recommend enough taking your trip during the last half of September. Not only do you get nice cool (but not cold) autumn weather, but the balance of daylight and darkness gives you a full day of seeing the dramatic landscapes plus a full night of darkness to soak up the incredible aurora. It's September! The best time of the year for photography is almost here. In the next 3 months, the leaves will change colors, the aurora will begin to dance across the northern skies and the sunsets will be as vibrant and dramatic. Shooting unspoiled nature scenes is my favorite pursuit in photography, but sometimes there's a man-made addition that is so in-tune with the setting that it becomes part of the landscape itself. The Sun Voyager in Reykjavik is one of those places. I'd put the Golden Gate Bridge, St. Louis Arch and most of the lighthouses of Maine on that short list as well. What other landmarks can you think of that define the landscape around it?

Perpetual View || Kirkjufell, Iceland

There's something uniquely permanent about photographing the mountains. I've been to Kirkjufell 3 or 4 times now and while the seasons and my cameras have changed, the mountain is constant. I've seen this view with a brilliant sunset, streaking auroras, a dusting of snow, and lost in the clouds. Yet the rocks are always just as they were before.
