December 6-10 is #olderdriversafetyawareness week. American Occupational Therapy Association mentions independent transportation networks (like NVRides!) can help older adults stay engaged in the community when they can no longer drive. Dr. Gawande wrote the book "Being Mortal" about death and dying. The book is great and I can't wait to see/hear him this evening.

Fairfax County Emergency Information
in Coronavirus (COVID-19), COVID-19 Vaccine
What You Need to Know About Forthcoming Expanded Vaccination Opportunities
Booster Dose Updates
As part of a multi-step process, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel met on Oct. 14 and 15. The panel recommended a booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for those 65 years and older and for those 18-64 years old who are higher risk due to underlying medical conditions, occupational exposure, or because they live in an institution. The panel recommended a Moderna booster that is half the dosage of the vaccine used for the primary series of the shot. FDA advisors also recommended a booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine for those 18 years and older and who had their first dose of more than two months ago.

In the days ahead, the FDA will decide whether to adopt the recommendations of its advisory panel and, if so, will modify the Emergency Use Authorization for those vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will then meet to discuss boosters for both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines and make recommendations on who will be eligible and specify the timeframe. The CDC director then will issue recommendations based on the advisory committee guidance and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) will provide additional implementation guidance to health departments and providers in the Commonwealth.

Although we provide rides, these are great tips for anyone walking. Our drivers can also use these tips when out and about.

At some point in the day, everyone is a pedestrian and unfortunately pedestrian fatalities remain high. In 2019, 6,205 pedestrians died. Protect yourself and your loved ones when walking, and learn how you can help us prevent pedestrian injuries and deaths. #PedestrianSafetyMonth

Important considerations. Please be aware of your loved ones fall risks.
Herndon Village Network provides rides to non-driving seniors
www.herndonvillagenetwork.org

⚠️Physical Fall Risk Factors
🔴Legs weaken with inactivity. Inactivity creates changes muscle strength, balance and coordination. When we sit most of the time, we lose the muscle strength that we need to use to stand, walk and move, and this can lead to falls.
🔴Different chronic conditions can effect fall risk for various reasons (neuropathy, fatigue, stiffness, quality of sleep, etc.)
🔴It is best practice to get a vision exam annually or if you notice a sudden change in vision. When you first start wearing new lenses or have eye surgery it may take time to adjust how you need to hold your head to see clearly, especially when going up and down steps or curbs.
🔴 Some medication side effects may make you dizzy, unsteady, or sleepy. It is best to keep a record of any changes you may experience after starting a new medication.

Third Dose Vaccinations Now Available for Individuals Who Are Immunocompromised
Residents of the Fairfax Health District who have immune systems that are compromised due to medical conditions or are receiving immunosuppressive medications or treatments and who have received two doses of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer BioNTech or Moderna) are now eligible to receive a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine at the Fairfax County Health Department clinics.
This updated guidance follows authorization of the third dose mRNA vaccine by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommendation by CDC. The Virginia Department of Health announced this update late Friday, Aug. 13 and Fairfax Health District officials worked to update their administrative processes so that eligible individuals would be able to receive their third vaccination at health department clinics beginning Saturday, Aug. 14.
The third dose should be administered at least 28 days after the second dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine. People 12 years and older can receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and individuals 18 years and older can receive the Moderna vaccine. The third dose should be the same mRNA vaccine as the primary series. The Fairfax County Health Department is supplying only Pfizer vaccine at this time. People who received the Moderna vaccine can visit www.vaccines.gov to find a provider.

Who Is Eligible?
An additional dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine after an initial 2-dose primary mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series should be considered for people with moderate to severe immune compromise due to a medical condition or receipt of immunosuppressive medications or treatments. These conditions and treatments include but are not limited to:
Active treatment for a solid tumor and cancers of the blood.
Receipt of solid-organ transplant and taking medications to suppress the immune system.
Receipt of stem cell transplant within the last two years or taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (e.g., DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome).
Advanced or untreated HIV infection.
Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (i.e., ≥20mg prednisone or equivalent per day), or other drugs that may suppress the immune system.

There is no proof of medical condition required to receive a third dose of vaccine at one of the Fairfax County Health Department vaccination sites, and individuals will not be asked to provide medical documentation.
While available evidence shows that a third dose provides a modest benefit to improving the immune response to mRNA vaccination, it is important to remember that immunocompromised people might still not have a strong level of protection against COVID-19, even after receiving a third dose of vaccine. Additional COVID-19 precautions remain important and include wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance from others outside of the home, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces. People who are immunocompromised are encouraged to consult with their medical provider.
There is not enough information to recommend an additional vaccine dose for people who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Studies are currently underway to evaluate the protection provided by the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to people with weakened immune systems. Recommendations for these people will be coming in the near future. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend that people with a compromised immune system who have received a dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine start a new vaccination series with Pfizer or Moderna.
For more information COVID-19 vaccination clinics, visit the Fairfax County website for updates on locations, hours of operation and other helpful resources.

Volunteer Spotlight

With an impressive record of 55 rides (and counting) provided to our members since joining HVN just this past April, Perry G is the subject of this month’s HVN Driver Spotlight!

After retiring from a career as an “IT guy” for a few Datacom companies, Perry was looking for an opportunity to “give back” to the community—and lucky for us, he found Herndon Village Network!

As many of our members who have learned as they’ve enjoyed the company of a ride with Perry, he is friendly and enjoys meeting and chatting with them. He gets a sense of satisfaction from helping a neighbor get somewhere they need to be, especially if they have no other transportation alternative available to them.

To prospective drivers, Perry says this: “Drive a lot and get some experience.”
