Great news reported on the progress on the road to for Canadian Concrete Masonry Producers Association:

✅Block producers throughout Canada and US are focusing on ways to reduce embodied carbon.

✅ CCMPA producers recently released the second version of their Canadian industry-average EPD, proving notable reductions in GWP from the first version.

✅80% of Canadian block producers are using portland-limestone cements (GUL).

✅ Industry research into carbon uptake by Concrete Masonry Units shows that it happens at higher amounts and much quicker for CMU that previously thought. Research on this is nearing publication through ASTM.

Camp Pendleton exemplifies all the reasons to use concrete masonry in a mixed-use development: it is attractive, strong, durable, and provides many of the health, safety, and welfare benefits sought by the Department of Defense in its built environments. Those are very similar to the benefits any private developer or local government would set for a large project or a new town center.

Concrete masonry units (CMU) are some of the most durable, cost-efficient, fire-safe and non-combustible building materials in the world. And a new program connecting block producers, contractors, consumers and other stakeholders will enable the industry to carve out a bigger share of the construction market through a concerted, multi-faceted effort supported by a new national checkoff program—https://buff.ly/3wer2cQ.

Borne out of a need for industry-wide strategic investments to promote CMU as a world-class building material, the Checkoff is administered by the DOC and will create key program areas by which the industry can grow demand for its products. Six key program areas were identified early in the checkoff development process that will stoke improved demand for CMU:

1️⃣. Marketing
2️⃣. Codes & Standards
3️⃣. Education & Research
4️⃣. Workforce Recruitment
5️⃣. Educate Design Pros
6️⃣. Support Design

Current estimated production of around 1 billion blocks per year and a levy of one cent per produced and sold in the U.S. will yield $10 million in funding for the six key program areas.
