Sound Cylinders are a traditional Montessori material isolating a single auditory sense: the sense of hearing.
Sound cylinders come in two (red and blue) identical sets of six sealed wooden cylinders that make a distinctive sound when shaken. The cylinders are graded from very soft to loud, and each cylinder has either a red or a blue top.

Montessori geography lessons, activities, and materials are a beautiful and unique part of early childhood and elementary classrooms.

Here we have a friend tracing, coloring and labeling the United States. He started with the globe, then worked on North America and now he is doing the United States.

There are two components of Montessori geography:

Physical Geography and Cultural Geography.

We begin with the big picture (e.g. the universe) and move inward toward the details of a community, home, family, and ourselves.

A core tenet of the Montessori works is to introduce children to the fact that we are a small part of this giant universe and within that universe, we must coexist with all others.

This child is learning the states, capitals, flags and state abbreviations while practicing his fine motor and reading skills. He is intrinsically motivated to create something beautiful and unique!

Here is a friend using the Metal Inset work.

“The Metal Insets, generally found in the Primary and Lower Elementary classrooms, are used to develop a core set of skills that build upon one another in sequence. In the Primary classroom, this material is the first direct preparation for handwriting. The introduction to the Metal Insets usually follows a lot of indirect preparation for handwriting that is developed through the use of the Practical Life materials and the Sensorial materials (e.g. the three finger pincer grasp used with the small tongs, eye dropper, and knobbed cylinders aids the child in correct pencil grip).”

Here is a second year student pin punching the continent of Asia.

"Pin punching is a fine motor activity found in Montessori primary classrooms (ages 3-6). Using a small push pin, students carefully create perforation around a shape by making small holes along the line. The student can then gently tear out their shape. The closer together and more accurate the punching, the easier it is to remove the shape creating a built in control of error and motivation for careful work. Visual motor coordination is also developed by keeping holes close together along the line. Holding the small push pin builds strength in the hands for future fine motor development."

Becoming proficient in using a writing instrument is a long process. When children work with the Metal Insets, they engage and practice a host of fine motor skills including lightness of touch, evenness of pressure, continuity of line, and control of line. Not to mention, this work also aids children in the development of concentration, memory and a sense of order (all necessary for executive function).

“In this way…children perfect themselves in writing without actually writing.” – Dr. Maria Montessori, The Montessori Method

The moveable alphabet is a Montessori material which recognises that most children will be able to start spelling words long before they have the fine motor skills to write them.

"As she begins to write using the moveable alphabet letters she will directly experience the way in which letters make words, and how print goes from right to left and from top to bottom. It will give her an opportunity to connect writing directly with speech and she will be very quick to make the leap between writing things down and actually being able to read back what she has written.” - MM

Light a Candle for Peace

Happy International Peace Day!

In Montessori classrooms all around the world, including ours, children sing this song throughout the day around 10 am their time to sing peace around the world.

"Peace is a practical principle of human civilisation and social organisation that is based on the very nature of man. Peace does not enslave him; rather, it exalts him.... And because it is based on man’s nature, it a constant, a universal principle that applies to all human beings. This principle must be our guide in building a science of peace and educating men for peace.” (Dr. Montessori, Education and Peace)

On Monday, September 21 2016 Montessori children from around the world will sing Light a Candle for Peace to celebrate the United Nations 2016 Day of Peace. ...

Introducing...MONTESSORI MATERIALS SPOTLIGHT where we share the kind of work your children do in the classroom and why.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

PRACTICAL LIFE BASICS

Spooning transfer, basting transfer, and toothpick transfer are just a few of the ways children in a Montessori classroom practice basic motor skills. Spooning and basting (as well as using tongs and eye droppers) allow children to practice real life skills that they might use while eating or cooking. The children repeat the action, transferring material from one place to another, practicing and refining the skill. The development of practical skills allows the child to participate and be independent in the activities of the home and school.

But, something is happening here that goes far deeper than just skill building. Beyond practical skill development, the materials prepare the children for when they are ready to explore academic development. They help the child build fine and gross motor control of the hands and body, strengthen muscles, and fine tune coordination. Developing this control allows children to manipulate more complex materials later, such as tiny beads for mathematics work. Activities like the tong transfer coordinate the pincer grip, as each child picks up the toothpicks using this grasp, and prepare the child to hold and control a pencil for writing.

If you study the materials even more closely, you will discover that they are ordered from left to right, creating a visual requirement for the children to direct their concentration from left to right as they would do in reading and writing. This directionality is not natural to the child, but becomes natural through the arrangement of the activities.

So the next time you ask your child what he or she did today and the answer is "spooning," know just what big important work that is!

Any questions? Just leave them in the comments!

Can Multiage Classrooms Improve Learning Outcomes?

"Multiage education, say its proponents, puts learners at the center, socially and academically. On the social side, younger children look for guidance to older students who know the ropes, while the older students in the classroom organically learn about mentoring, leadership, and collaboration."

theatlantic.com Advocates say dividing students by birthdate is arbitrary.
