Eating a balanced diet is sensible advice for anyone, but it is even more important if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer. The body needs vital nutrients and vitamins in order to keep healthy, fight infections and perform at its best. When you are ill, eating well can help ease the symptoms of your disease, help you recover better from treatments, as well as give you more energy and help maintain a healthy body weight. However, cancer treatments can make you feel nauseous and leave you with little appetite.

Choose Healthy Foods
• Choose whole grain breads and cereals
• Drink 100% fruit or vegetable juices. (Make sure they are pasteurized because you may be more susceptible to germs
while you’re getting cancer treatment)
• Fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruits
• A few times a week, choose meatless meals such as vegetarian lasagna or vegetable stir-fry
• Have a leafy green salad with dinner unless you have been told to avoid raw foods
• Limit sugary foods -- the kind with lots of calories but very little nutrition
• Pick lean meats and fish over fatty red meat and processed meats

Ask your oncologist or a nutritionist if you need extra calories and protein to keep your strength up during treatment.

Use these tips to help your senior with their cancer treatment:

• Show love, respect, and encouragement by empowering your patient to make the decisions that are right for them and supporting them in every step of these decisions.

• Create a care network of friends, family, neighbors, and elderly care providers that will surround your parent in care and support throughout this journey.

• Be there for them when they just need to talk and let them know that you care about what they are feeling and what they have to say about it.

• Coordinate logistics of their care, such as transportation to and from appointments well in advance to ease their mind and help them to feel secure in their treatment plan.

• Seek out professional services such as support groups, therapists, and care providers that can support your care efforts and address elements of your parent’s care and management that you might not be able to handle on your own.

Many cancer treatments and cancers can cause changes in your blood counts. A low white blood cell (WBC) count can put you at higher risk of infection. You may hear this called neutropenia, or be told that you are neutropenic. The WBC count measures your body’s ability to fight infection. When your WBC count is low, you’ll need to watch for signs of infection in order to get the right treatment promptly.

Symptoms of Infection to Look For:

- Fever
- Any new area of redness, tenderness, or swelling
- Pus or yellowish discharge from an injury or other location
- New cough or shortness of breath
- New abdominal (belly) pain
- Shaking chills that may be followed by sweating
- Burning or pain when passing urine
- Sore throat
- Sores or white patches in the mouth
