Can a Montessori Home Environment Be Colorful? | Guidepost Montessori

If you've ever wondered, "Can a Montessori toy be colorful?" then you'll appreciate our explanation in full, on our blog here: https://www.guidepostmontessori.com/blog/can-a-montessori-home-environment-be-colorful

In short, the specificity with colors in Montessori school promotes concentration and serenity because your child goes to school to work. Facilitating your home to be a calm and inclusive space isn't accomplished by duplicating the classroom. We can support them at home within the framework of what makes our home special and unique.

There is a greater misconception that a child’s world needs to be overstimulating in order to be inviting. It’s not uncommon to see bright primary colors, cartoonish-designs, busy light-up, noisy toys as the presumed “age-appropriate” default for our homes. Unfortunately, this isn’t complementary to how the young child’s absorbent mind works.

There are valuable takeaways to consider about Montessori’s prepared environment that can empower you to complement learning as it intersects with living. Young children absorb their surroundings with even greater sensitivity than we do. Too many competing sensory inputs overwhelms them. Young children also appreciate real beauty and real work in full authenticity, and they connect more purposefully when they have unrestricted access to everyday life as it is.

Montessori at home doesn’t restrict color; it reminds us not to restrict natural beauty.

Normalization is one of those Montessori terms that doesn't have an obvious meaning. In fact, if you were to have to guess at what it means, you might say a process of forcing children to conform or become 'normal', but nothing could be further from the truth.

Normalization, as Maria Montessori used it, describes observations she made about a child's development. She observed that if a child is allowed to work at their own pace in a classroom and with materials that had been prepared for them, the child found peace, contentment and satisfaction.

Through the process of normalization, a child also developed self-discipline and intrinsic motivation, two characteristics that can't really be taught or enforced. That's one reason Montessori thought of normalization as "the most important single result of our whole work."

Strong social skills, including manners, etiquette, problem solving, emotional control, and patience, are taught and modeled in a Montessori classroom as often as reading or math. Extend Grace and courtesy lessons outside of school to build your child’s social communication.

Why Guidepost Stood Out for This Parent | Guidepost Montessori

"We’re no different than any other parent — above all else, we want our kids to be happy. It’s not like Jazlyn wasn’t being challenged in Montessori; She did experience discomfort working through things in Montessori. The difference is she developed the ability to push through that difficulty and struggle with the help of the Montessori method and her guides.

She now possesses an understanding of how she can handle difficult things, and she has a strapping sense that she will continue to find self-satisfaction in conquering difficult, challenging situations.

We see similar changes in Haven too — she’s emotionally stronger and more resilient. Their guide has expressed that they both choose work and put forth their very best efforts into it. Through the transformational work, they are constructing themselves. Guidepost has thrown us in an entirely new direction. It’s beautiful and it's worth the investment.

I want to keep my kids at Guidepost for as long as possible
When we first started at Montessori, the Head of School at the time said, “They’re not going to want to leave when you pick them up.” I was thinking, “Yeah, right.” But she was right — literally, we couldn't get them to leave. My daughters have said it themselves. Guidepost Montessori is like their second home."

Practical life lessons inspire the child with real-world, purposeful tasks and tools, helping them to see themselves, correctly, as capable and competent.

Maria Montessori says, “A child who has become master of his acts through long and repeated exercises, and who has been encouraged by the pleasant and interesting activities in which he has been engaged, is a child filled with health and joy and remarkable for his calmness and discipline.” — The Discovery of the Child

The Montessori approach to human development is based on the belief in the potential of the child, and on the belief that it is only the child who can realize this potential. To grow up well is to grow up to be increasingly independent, capable, confident, happy and secure. At Guidepost, we are the village that supports you in raising your child.

We’re Open and Offer Emergency Child Care for Essential Workers

Guidepost Montessori at Herndon is now offering Emergency Care for Essential Workers (ECEW) to “essential workers” seeking child care services during the COVID-19 crisis so that they can remain focused on their critical work. The program will be offered to families within and outside the Guidepost network. Care will be provided for children ages 8 weeks-6 years in small group cohorts (10 students per classroom) on-site at our existing locations, or within the existing infrastructure on-site within medical facilities and their surrounding properties.

The employees within my organization need care. How can we get involved?
There are a number of offerings at various levels of involvement available to your organization. Bring your employees to us.

  • Employees find care at a Guidepost school. Provide a co-branded flyer to your employees with information and next steps so they can reserve a spot at your nearest Guidepost school.

  • Reserve “bulk seats” at a Guidepost school. As an employer, reserve or pre-purchase a set number of seats at (or buy out in total) a Guidepost school. Discounts available for 10+ seats reserved.
