🚙 Do you know what’s under the hood?
.
Metabolic testing allows you to see how you, as an individual, are burning fuel at rest or during activity
.
😴Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the amount of calories that you would burn at rest. This rate can be affected by hormone levels, chronic pathology or many other factors. It is not always so cut and dry. Sometimes it won’t match that number you can calculate with a search on G👀gle!
.
⚖️Understanding your individual values can help guide you to meet your nutrition goals whether it be for weight loss, athlete performance or muscle gain
.
📏What gets measured gets managed!

🔰Keep pushin’!
.
📸:

Are your quads and calves toast 🍞 by the end of a hard race or effort? Are you able to feel your glutes 🍑 at all?
.
🤔 Maybe it’s time to check the placement of the cleats to make sure you are able to get some of that posterior chain in the picture
.
Muscles 💪 need to be put on stretch in order to store the energy and release it 🎢
.
How your feet 👣 are placed on the bike can determine how you utilize the muscles

🙋♂️ What is bodywork?
.
A dynamic treatment involving moving the joints actively or passively allows me to feel the glide (or lack of glide) between different layers of muscle and tissue, this gives valuable feedback as to what structures are stuck. Joint motion also allows a more precise approach to generating tension in the tissues and breaking up the adhesions. Advanced trainings like Active release technique (ART) have been helpful for fine-tuning this skill
.
Movement also affects the nervous system. It can be perceived as relaxing, distracting, or stimulating to the area being worked which can help facilitate release of the muscles and fascia
.
🗺 An understanding of compensatory patterns:
Further education beyond massage therapy, including a masters degree in sports medicine and a doctorate in chiropractic has given a stronger understanding of biomechanics and compensatory patterns. While every issue is unique, this fundamental roadmap helps prioritize which areas to focus on to get the body back in balance. The pain generator is not always the root cause of the issue, muscles contract in poly-articular muscle chains, not in isolation
.
💆♂️ What to expect from a treatment:
Appointments are catered to the individual’s goals and needs. A typical appointment consists of a quick motion screen or functional movement assessment, palpation/touch to assess motion and quality of muscle tissue, a blend of Active Release Technique(ART) and deep tissue bodywork to restore range of motion or alleviate areas of tightness. Joint mobilizations/adjustments and functional exercise recommendations may also be incorporated into the treatment
.
❤️🩹 Why you do it/need it? Who is it for?
When getting bodywork, patients will often comment “I didn’t even know I was sore there”
For a patient that is training hard and/or motivated to do self-care, this is valuable information to take home, as the patient now has more information about what is out of balance in the body and perhaps a better idea of which areas to stretch/roll/strengthen to remedy the problem

Here is his bio:
.
In 2006, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, Chris graduated from Maui School of Therapeutic Massage. Moving from the Washington DC area to Hawaii provided great growth opportunities and life experience beyond the massage school curriculum. Shortly after massage school, with an interest in sports and biomechanics, Chris certified in Active Release Technique (ART)
.
Chris practiced sports oriented deep tissue massage therapy combined with Active Release Technique (ART) for over 10 years. He is also a graduate of University of Western States with a Doctorate in Chiropractic, a Masters of Sports Medicine, and is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP). This diverse background has strengthened his skills in anatomy, assessment, diagnosis, and ability to get to the root of more complex musculoskeletal issues
.
An active lifestyle, including training for marathons, yoga, surfing, snowboarding, and functional weight training has enhanced his knowledge of injuries, healing, & recovery through firsthand experience, which has proven to be a valuable asset in helping others recover from pain and injury
.
Chris has worked at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon and has provided care on-site at events with Nike Track and Field at national championship and world championship events. He has also been a part of the medical team in various World Surf League Pro events. Collaborating with an integrative treatment team and learning from other doctors and therapists of multiple disciplines has been an inspiring way to keep learning new skills

🦶 Foot comfort is one of the most important things on the bike
.
I have personally been super frustrated with the cycling industry’s lack of accommodations to us wide footed people 🙋🏻♂️

These premium Italian 🇮🇹 Handmade shoes by .cc are an amazing blend of style, performance and comfort

I have a 2E width foot and I can actually fit in a properly sized toe box without the numbness and ache that comes with typical cycling shoes!

Cues and Core

A growing teenager will have to learn how to control their body and understand how to generate power. Today’s session was a good learning lesson on how to use different cues. Getting the teenage rider to understand the concept of generating power evenly through the pedals is underrated!

🇺🇸 It’s a day that I will always remember. A day when I realized that freedom should not be taken for granted. A day I realized that this life is all too short and tomorrow is never guaranteed
.
I saw these two young men this morning on my ride and I know they were probably not even born when the attacks occurred. But they understand the impact of the sacrifices that were made to protect this country. This is something that should unite us, not divide
.

“My growth plates are still wide open”. Must be nice … must be nice 😉. Thanks for coming all the way up to get the rigs dialed in!
So someone forgot to tell me that today was Labor Day and we were supposed to take the day off 🤷🏻♂️⁉️
.
Well they do say… “Do what you love and and you’ll never work a day in your life”
.
I suppose that’s true when you meet cool people like
The Good Fellas droppin’🔥 in the DMV
Obsession with motion. Analyze, discuss, adjust, repeat 🔁. It was good to spend time with of today!

Saddle 🆙

It’s always a good time with these juniors!
.
🥽 Must be nice to be plastic and adaptable
.
ℹ️ FYI for all you parents, please put your kids in all kinds of sports that include multidirectional movement. Your kids will thank you when they get older. Just sayin! 😃

😩Low back pain
.
Low back is common and you are not alone. Nearly everyone will experience some type of back pain at some point in their life
.
Why does this occur? Because the discs in our back are gradually going to thin out over time. That’s how it is and it’s part of the aging process. It’s normal
.
When you are experiencing back pain while cycling, there is usually a causative factor. The load that you are demanding is too great for the lumbar spine
.
Our spines are resilient but they also need the proper timing of muscles and passive structure like ligaments and active paraspinals to do their part to keep you upright and balanced on the bike while you’re pedaling
.
Unlike lifting injuries where the external demand oftentimes becomes too great for the individual, back injuries in cycling can typically go unnoticed for a very long time…. That’s due to the antigravity nature of cycling in general
.
Sitting on a saddle without much input from ground reaction force from the feet demands quite a bit of low back and pelvis stability. The synchronization of the deep inner core muscles are what keeps us upright on the saddle
.
Understanding what limitations you may have will clue you in the right direction. Diagnosing, treating and implementing a proper plan will give you hope in finding a solution. So get assessed and stop google guessing!
.
🙏 Thanks for coming in and getting your bike(s) and body on the right track
Prone Pectoral Release
.
Here is a great drill we’ve been using lately in the clinic. I like mobility drills like this because it requires very little cueing to get it correct
.
✅ Check it off your mobility routine
.
🔸Start on your stomach
🔸Place hands in a “T” position
🔸Place right hand into the floor
🔸Lift the right leg up and over and feel the stretch on the left side
🔸Hold for 30” and repeat on the other side
