I am asked this question often. “Should bilingual parents of children with language disorders continue to speak their native language?” The answer is YES.
smartspeechtherapy.com Despite significant advances in the fields of education and speech pathology, many harmful myths pertaining to multilingualism continue to persist. One particularly infuriating and patently incorrect recommendation to parents is the advice to stop speaking the birth language with their bilingual chi...

Screen time: too much too young does lead to addiction and aggression.
Too much screen time also robs children of the opportunities to learn to self-regulate.
Please think twice before consoling your toddler with your phone.
deeprootsathome.com Often parents have a nagging sense they should limit screen time, but often question whether there’s enough evidence to justify yanking coveted devices.

This research coincides with Dr Greenspan’s Floortime Approach I use daily with my clients. Communication is fundamentally socially motivated. When you have the child’s engagement in repetitive turns focused on the same action that’s when the magic happens.
Take the time to talk WITH your kids rather than TO them.
news.mit.edu Study finds engaging young children in conversation is more important for brain development than “dumping words” on them.

This is really fascinating and yet another great reason to use pacifiers only to "pacify". Children need time to have their mouths free to play with tongue movements and attempt sounds and words!

ted.com Artist and TED Fellow Christine Sun Kim was born deaf, and she was taught to believe that sound wasn't a part of her life, that it was a hearing person's thing. It’s that time of year again and I know everyone is looking for just the right Christmas gifts! I’d love to share with you some of my favorite toys and games to facilitate cognitive, motor, and language development.
For INFANTS who are sitting independently I recommend musical toys such as a small piano or drum toy. The music is sure to get their attention and activating the keys or buttons teaches them the concept of cause and effect. Don’t be afraid to go back to basics. Rubber blocks or balls may be simple but banging items together is actually an important motor skill (bilateral movement toward midline) that creates important neural pathways for learning. And rolling a ball back in forth sets the foundation for that back and forth exchange of conversation.
For TODDLERS on the go it’s great to reinforce their new walking skills with push/pull toys. You’ll get more mileage out of it (i.e. a few more minutes to yourselves moms!) if it has multiple functions such as sitting, shape sorter, and buttons with music and lights. For the 12-24 month age group I also want you think multiple steps! I love toys that have several functions such as balls going in the top, activating with a button to drop, and a door on the bottom to take the balls out. This lays the ground work for sequencing concepts and more complex pretend play!
For the 2-3 year olds think movement! Consider purchasing a tunnel or miniature trampoline to create obstacle courses. Again this sequencing of motor movements leads to sequencing words into sentences. It also makes them plan and problem solve which is fundamental to those critical thinking skills they’ll need as adults! Dolls and stuffed animals, play kitchens, dollhouses, and doctor sets are all great for facilitating pretend play. Learning to role play and be in character helps children form “theory of mind” skills which basically means they understand that other people have feelings and ideas too.
For PRESCHOOLERS, engage their creativity with playdoh, art projects, and Lego Duplo’s. I love the magnetic sets that let you dress the girl a million different ways and the old school Colorforms you can use over and over. Again these lead to more complex play and help children toward generating stories and character development. Matching games help them learn the concepts of “same” and “different” as well as early turn-taking skills they’ll need on the playground! Also consider a hopscotch rug to practice balance skills while reinforcing numbers!
I hope these ideas have been helpful and that you’ll keep them in mind as you do your holiday shopping. If you’d like any further suggestions please feel free to email at [email protected]!
