Pedro Sauer, professor of Gracie Jiu Jitsu A true master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Professor Pedro Sauer gives us insight into growing up on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, how being friends with Rickson Gracie and the "gentle art" changed his life and how its philosophies of patience, connection and respect may be able to change the world.

Professor Jamie is a first degree Pedro Sauer Black Belt & opened J3 in March 2014. Jamie is a family man and proud “Pops” of four kids. He has dedicated his life to creating a environment where both competitors and extreme hobbyist can integrate and support each other in life’s journey. Through his expectational leadership and teaching style students are able to make the art of jiu jitsu a lifestyle they can practice safely into old age.

Wise words! Standards matter
When it comes to promoting someone part of what I look for is not just do they know the material, but are they willing to do the work even when it involves certain aspects of training they don’t particularly like.
Many times, especially as students rise through the ranks towards Blackbelt they can become hyper focused on an area of training that they prefer. A part of it that they love.
While it is great to specialize in an area (let’s say takedowns, or the guard, etc.) it is my job to make sure each student is well rounded in all areas of the art. 
As an example, early in my training I was primarily known for my guard. I almost never used top position.  It wasn’t till late in my purple belt days that one of my coaches (Keith Owen) told me that my guard was excellent but that my mount sucked. And yes, he said it just like that …He assigned me to work on top position and I did that for many years. Focusing on it till now it’s actually my best position. If you only stick to your favorite techniques, you will never grow.
