Significant changes to SNAP (food) benefits - Monthly benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) were being supplemented by an additional allotment as approved by the government during the pandemic. That supplement ended last month. For many families, the supplement was an essential support. Please see the posted notices with resources to help anyone in need of food and consider supporting one of the many great organizations providing food assistance to our neighbors here in Fairfax County. Thanks to Groundswell DC, CD-W, The Literacy Council, Cornerstones, and the many private citizen volunteers who came out to support the effort lead by our Executive Director, Mary Rus Saunders and the H-R FISH administrative team.

Groundswell teamed up with Herndon-Reston FISH to support their annual Holiday food and toy drive. The event offered assistance to over 250 families in our region. FISH has served the community since 1969 to help families cope with short-term financial crises by providing Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help.

On Giving Tuesday, will you give some of your time to help local families have a happier holiday season? Herndon-Reston FISH is having in person food and holiday gift distribution for more than 235 local families.

We need volunteers to help:

💚Dec 8-9: Sort donated food, select gifts for children, and pack totes with the food, gifts, and gift cards for each family;

🍁Dec 10-11 Distribute the filled totes from United Christian Parish

🎁Dec 12: Pack up remaining items and help move them to H-R FISH offices for later distribution

These shifts can be done by singles, families, work teams, friends, anyone who can lend a hand. Sign up at tinyurl.com/HRfish22

We are sorting the donated toys at my home, and anyone who wants to donate any new toys or books for those up to 10 years old may drop them at the collection box at Chesapeake Chocolates at Lake Anne, or at my front door.

We are also requesting donations of new toys for children up through age 10, $25 gift cards for local grocery stores, and to Target (gifts for kids 11-19.) Donations can be left in the collection box at Chesapeake Chocolates at Lake Anne, or at our thrift store, The Bargain The Bargain Loft.

FISH Holiday Volunteers 2022 Help Herndon Reston FISH provide food and gift baskets to local families in need. Collected food is sorted, packaged and distributed from United Christian Parish located at 11508 North Shore Drive, Reston, VA 20190, next door to Lake Anne Elementary School.

Thank you to Chesapeake Chocolates (https://cheschoc.com) on Lake Anne (Reston) for being a toy and non-perishable food drop-off location for our Holiday Food & Gift Program. This year, we hope to help 225 families in need. Your support is greatly appreciated.
