Jonathon Heyward named BSO music director, replacing Marin Alsop and becoming only Black conductor to helm major U.S. symphony orchestra Heyward’s appointment marks the second time in four months that a person of color has been selected to head a major Baltimore cultural institution.

We are thrilled to announce Thomas Mesa, Cellist, soprano Aundi Marie Moore, and composer Joel Thompson as the 2023 Sphinx Medal of Excellence honorees! Recognizing extraordinary classical Black and Latinx musicians, the Sphinx Medal of Excellence is the highest honor bestowed by the Sphinx Organization. Honorees receive a $50,000 grant to help continue furthering their careers and making music to share with the world. We are thrilled to continue supporting these recipients’ artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, and ongoing commitment to leadership and their communities.
