The Hofstra University Summer High School Journalism Institute is funded with the generous support of the Press Club of Long Island and the New York Press Association. Its mission is to introduce Nassau County high school students from communities of color to journalism and encourage them to enter the field. Participants must have demonstrated a prior interest in the media through their participation in their student newspapers and/or literary journals.

Thank you so much to Alexandra Giordano of the Museum, who gave our students in the High School Summer Journalism Institute such an insightful tour of the Pride sculpture gardens to hone their close observational skills — and spend an afternoon in the sun!

Photos from Hofstra University M.A. Journalism Program's post

We're having a blast at the Hofstra High School Summer Journalism Institute! Highlights over the last two days included a visit by our friend Shawna VanNess, senior assistant managing editor for features at Newsday, and a tour of Hofstra's sculpture gardens by Hofstra Museum Director Karen Albert!! Personally loved the "Creating" and Frederick Douglass statues!! 😀😀😀

Participants in the Hofstra HigH School Summer Journalism Institute spent part of Day One on the East Quad interviewing each other for biographies that they will be writing this week. A perfect afternoon indeed!

On Day One of the Hofstra High School Summer Journalism Institute, my good friend and former colleague Mike Otterman spoke to the students about his experiences researching and writing two books examining torture and war refugees. We are incredibly grateful to the Bernard and Sandra Otterman Foundation, which funds the Summer Institute!

We are sooooo excited to announce that the Hofstra University High School Summer Journalism Institute is back after a one-summer hiatus owing to the coronavirus pandemic!! The dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, Mark Lukasiewicz, was on hand Day One to greet the students! Looking forward to the next five days of learning and fun!
