A Letter to My Daughter

In the spring of 1995, on a warm and blossoming long weekend, you came into this world.
At that time, I was even younger than you are now. I didn’t yet know how to be a mother，only that my heart was overflowing with joy and anticipation for your arrival.

I’m forever thankful for such a gentle baby. You never cried at night, and by your first week, you were already sleeping through till morning, a true gift for your parents.

When you were four, your kindergarten invited parents to a Mother’s Day party. As I walked into the classroom, you sat on a little wooden chair. I knelt down, and with your tiny hands, you placed a necklace hand-made of macaroni around my neck and said in Chinese,
“Mommy, I actually love you.”
In that moment, tears streamed uncontrollably down my face—for it was the first time I had heard you speak such a long sentence in Chinese.
And it was in that moment I truly felt: I am a mother.
That entire party, I cried through it all, yet my heart was full of warmth.

In the blink of an eye, that little girl has grown into a lawyer.
Over the years, I’ve watched you walk your path with clarity and determination—planning your studies, building your career, overcoming challenges, and realizing your dreams.
You’ve achieved everything through your own effort, and I couldn’t be prouder.

What moves me most is how much of you feels like a continuation of me. You are truly heaven’s most precious gift.

Now, as you are about to marry,
there are a few things I wish to tell you:

✨ Be kind, loving, and forgiving—but have your boundaries.
Know how to protect yourself, wipe away your tears, and keep walking with strength.

✨ Remember: true happiness must come from within.
Don’t wait for anyone to “make your day.”
Instead, tell yourself, “I make my own day.”

✨ Marriage is not your entire life. Continue to grow into your best self, stay healthy, and remain strong and independent—both in work and in life.
No matter what stage of life you are in, always remember:
you are an independent, resilient woman.

Carry yourself with grace, calm, and confidence.
Stay young, beautiful, and joyful.
Be a light, illuminating yourself and your home.

Thank you for bringing into our lives a kind, beautiful, and vibrant son-in-law. Seeing the love and understanding between you two, how you support and grow with each other, I feel at ease.

And never forget—your home will always be your safe harbor.
A daughter who marries is not “poured-out water”;
you will forever be our beloved bébé. ❤️
