6:30am Weather Update from WKRK Staff Meteorologist Jennifer Narramore.....

Wintry weather is here folks! Please be careful as you are heading out and about today through Saturday morning. We will see a wide range of conditions.

The picture shows the latest advisories. Winter Weather Advisory continues from Cherokee and Clay in NC and now SE Monroe and Eastern Polk in TN is in this. This is the purple shading on the map.

The pink shows the winter storm warnings now in effect and this includes all of the North GA Mountains and for Macon County in NC extending all the way up into Asheville.

Based on the latest track of this system, the potential is still there for up to 2 inches or so for the lower elevations. As the day goes on some rain could mix with the snow keeping the totals lower. Should be cold enough though in the higher elevations for all snow and higher snow totals expected. Areas mainly 2500 ft + could see anywhere from 4-6 Inches.

The precipitation will be in place throughout the day and will really not taper until after midnight. Anyone who is able to get above freezing will fall again by eve so any moisture on the roads will refreeze.

The lower elevations should get above freezing through Saturday afternoon but then temperatures take a nose dive Saturday night and there could be refreezing again. We fall to lows between 15 and 20.

Stay vigilant & prepared....

Even though Irma is taking a little more time to make that northward turn than I originally thought, the end result is likely going to be the same.

The latest European model has Irma riding up the western coast of Florida. This will put most of Florida on the east side of the storm, which isn't good. The earlier run of the European model actually predicted the Cuban landfall, so I have reason to believe that its latest output is going to turn out to be pretty accurate.

For those in Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee, you need to continue to prepare for Irma. The level of impact from this system will depend on where you're located within these states, and I'll be providing additional specifics later today.

I noticed that we had a few commentators responding to people who had questions about Irma, telling people not to worry about Irma if they're located in the Carolinas, for example. While I encourage all of you to communicate with one other and express your thoughts, please understand that many of those responses do not accurately depict the Firsthand Weather predictions.

The 11 am Hurricane Center forecast brings the center of Irma into the region. Strong winds and heavy rain possible Monday into Tuesday.

09/07/2017

The black line represents the National Hurricane Center's latest track for Hurricane Irma, and I surrounded that track with a two degree buffer, shown in light purple. Basically, if that buffer intersects your state, it's shaded in red. I also included an invisible four degree (larger) buffer around the track, and if that intersects any additional states, it gets an orange shading.

If you're in Florida, Georgia, or the Carolinas, you should already been preparing for this hurricane. Levels of impact will be dependent on where you're located in a particular state, so be sure to refer to my article from last night that is more specific than what is shown by this map. Keep a close eye on the latest forecasts if you're in Tennessee or Virginia, and we'll address those regions, if needed, as we continue to forecast this event.
