Long Island-based Chembio, a leading point-of-care diagnostics company focused on detecting and diagnosing infectious diseases, including COVID-19, sexually transmitted, respiratory and insect vector diseases, will be holding a Job Fair on Sat., Aug. 28, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the company’s 3661 Horseblock Road, Medford, NY facility. The company is growing rapidly and has over 100 job openings. New staff is needed as the company scales up manufacturing to meet already existing orders for its infectious disease tests. Multiple manufacturing, quality and scientific positions are available and employment opportunities include full benefits, $16-$35 per hour wages, $2,000 sign-on bonuses and other financial incentives.

At this point, RUMC has quickly ramped up and trained its staff, completed the initial validation of the test kits, and begun testing staff for the antibodies. RUMC will be running and processing the tests, at its own cost and by its own lab technicians, for both their staff and for nursing facility tests.
So far, six RUMC staff members in the Department of Laboratory Medicine have been trained to analyze the tests. Currently, RUMC is averaging about 125 tests per day. To date, 700 tests have been completed.
The collaborative is working on completing required paperwork as well as memorandums of understanding with the skilled nursing facilities and respective partners so that the testing can begin at their sites.
We know an important step in beating COVID-19 is increasing the availability of both diagnostic as well as antibody testing, which is why we are grateful for this partnership to make it happen.

There is a new Subvariant, BA.2.12.1, spreading rapidly in the US. Cases have increased over 50% in the last 2 weeks. All but 1 State is seeing an increase in the number of cases.
This new variant is more contagious than the previous variants, and the Biden administration is predicting over 100M infections for the coming fall and winter season.

April is STD Awareness Month, and the CDC has released the most recent data on STDs from 2020
Syphilis has increased by 52% since 2016, and Congenital Syphilis has increased 235% since 2016. More than half of the reported cases of STDs were between the ages of 15-24.
The CDC puts a large emphasis on testing for STDs to help prevent the spread.

UNITAID has announced groundbreaking development; PrEP injections have rolled out in Brazil and South Africa as an alternative to the daily PrEP pill! One injection can offer up to 2 months of protection.

A study done by the University of Oxford has found a new variant of HIV. This new variant has shown to be potentially more infectious, and weaken the immune system much faster than previous HIV strains.

The FDA has expanded the medical device shortage list to include all blood specimen collection tubes. This shortage is affecting the availability of STD testing, specifically for HIV and Syphilis.

There was recently an outbreak of Flu in the University of Michigan and the CDC plans to investigate how it is spreading.
There have also been reported outbreaks in other Universities, like Rowan University, Florida State University, and Florida A&M.
With a lot of Students going home for the holidays, this could significantly increase the spread of the Flu.
