According to PWC’s Hopes and Fears Report, there’s a divide in the US workforce. Compared to many of their colleagues — employees with advanced knowledge or skills and those in senior executive positions — report being more likely to ask for a raise or promotion, take on more responsibilities, seek and offer feedback, and have flexibility and autonomy.

On the flip side, those without advanced skills or training and those below senior leadership are more likely to report financial insecurity, and have a role that requires fixed hours and an in-person presence, such as retail and manual labor.

According to PWC’s report, here’s how companies can be responsive when there’s a skills gap:

➡️ Take stock of the skills your workforce already has — and the ones you think you’ll need in the future.

➡️ Tie employee experience directly to upskilling and capability building. Provide incentives for completion that resonate with all your employees.

➡️ Automate manual activities and free capacity to address higher-value tasks.

➡️ Understand the preferences of your workforce and invest your efforts and resources in high-value programs.
