Freeman Companies President Rohan Freeman, PE, LS, recently delivered the keynote speech at the AIA Connecticut’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) Annual Conference.

The theme of the event, which took place on Sept. 15 at the Aria Wedding & Banquet Facility in Prospect, was Justice and Equity in the Built Environment. J.E.D.I. is an AIA “knowledge community” and was created with the goal of helping the AIA CT in “acknowledging and denouncing racism and sexism, removing barriers to opportunities, and promoting the success of all individuals in the profession to feel welcomed, respected, supported and valued to fully participate,” according to the AIA’s website.

Rohan spoke about starting both Freeman Companies and 7 Summits Construction, summitting some of the world’s highest peaks, and his experiences as an immigrant and black American both while working and climbing.

Rohan’s message to the attendees was to look for opportunities to help and do good work in their own community. Rohan highlighted some of his work in the Hartford Community, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford and the Blue Hills Civic Association.

The Goodwin Park Golf Course has been a Hartford, Connecticut landmark since its creation over 100 years ago.

Now Freeman Companies is pleased to be part of that history. And not just because some of our engineers have been known to make amazing shots on the links.

Freeman Companies civil engineering and landscape architects are collaborating with Tecton Architects, p.c., the prime architect on the project, to provide due diligence and concept design services to the City of Hartford for multiple proposed facility and site-related improvements to the beloved, historic Goodwin Park Golf Course.

The architectural elements being studied include conceptual designs for a new clubhouse building with expanded program and facilities, which will maintain views down the first fairway and coordinate with the civil engineering and landscape improvements. The potential for providing a new larger cart barn at a more desirable location, and upgrades to the existing pavilion, are also being explored.

Freeman Companies is guiding assessment of site-related improvements such as ADA access to the existing driving range, the redesign of the existing putting green, redesign and repair of the existing golf cart paths, the extension of site lighting north throughout the existing parking lot, feasibility of additional parking spaces at the unrenovated tennis courts, and an assessment for the drainage for the existing putting green and entire golf course.

John Charles Olmsted and Charles Eliot, of the firm Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot, established the park in 1895 as part of the Hartford Park System. Its most significant feature was the 90-acre Great Meadow, a gently sloping lawn left unmown and surrounded by native tree groves. In 1906 a nine-hole golf course was laid out upon the meadow, shortly followed by another nine holes in 1911. The meadow served as an airfield during the 1920s and in World War II. In 1927 an additional 37 acres were added to the southeast corner of the park, used to extend the golf course by another nine holes and introduce a second pond.

Since its creation the course has drawn people from all over to the links. Freeman Companies is glad to be a part of the history of this beautiful gem in our home city.

Rohan Freeman is set to be the keynote speaker at next month’s The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Connecticut’s Justice and Equity in the Built Environment event.

According to the AIA, the event, which takes place on Sept. 15 at The Aria in Prospect, was “created with the goal of increasing firm leaders' and associates' awareness and understanding of justice and equity in the built environment.”

Rohan Freeman is Founder and President of Freeman Companies, LLC, an award-winning, multi-disciplinary site development, engineering design, and construction services enterprise. He founded the company in 2009 shortly after summiting Mount Everest.

He has also summited the highest peak on every continent, known collectively as the Seven Summits, becoming the first African-American to achieve this feat. He went on to complete The Adventurer’s Grand Slam, which includes the Seven Summits and the North and South Poles.

Following the success of Freeman Companies, Rohan subsequently launched 7 Summits Realty and 7 Summits Construction, both named after his mountaineering feats.

While blazing trails in both his personal and professional life, Rohan has tried to make it easier for people to follow in his footsteps. He has served as a board member of multiple community and charitable organizations, including Connecticut Landmarks, The Bushnell, the University of Saint Joseph, the Connecticut Business and Industries Association and national board of Outward Bound, where he serves as Vice Chair. Rohan was also recently appointed by Governor Lamont to serve on the Governor’s Workforce Council. In 2014 he established the University of Connecticut School of Engineering “Freeman Companies BRIDGE Endowed Engineering Scholarship” to support minority students with an interest in civil engineering who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantage.

This is the fourth time the ballpark has been recognized as the best ballpark since it opened in 2017. The recognition comes from Ballpark Digest, an online publication dedicated to all aspects of ballparks.

Freeman Companies had a hand in the early stages of the project, including planning and engineering services.

The ballpark is the home to the Double-A Minor League Baseball team Hartford Yard Goats Baseball.

The Yard Goats are currently 59-36 and are scheduled to host the New Hampshire Fisher Cats for six games starting on Aug. 16.

Congratulations to Dunkin' Donuts Park and Hartford. And let’s go Yard Goats!

Closing off a street and redirecting traffic is never easy. It is especially difficult when that street is a busy thoroughfare in the heart of Connecticut’s capitol.
On June 26 Hartford hosted its first DominGO! Hartford event. The event, which featured vendors, live music, pop-up dances performances, and art installations, ran along Farmington Avenue from Whitney Street to Bushnell Park.
The City contracted Lumi Hospitality of Hartford to put together a multi-disciplinary event planning team, with Freeman Companies as the company responsible for traffic management. This meant, while everyone else was putting together plans for the festival, Yuyang Lin and Christopher Surprenant, of Freeman Companies’ Transportation and Traffic/Safety and Signal Engineering Group, were hard at work figuring out how to minimize the impact the additional traffic and road closures would have on residents and festival attendees.
This included completely closing Farmington Avenue to all traffic, making streets surrounding the route open to local traffic only, and ensuring motorists could safely bypass the festival area. The plans also made sure that police and fire stations remained open and emergency vehicles had easy access to and from the festival.
There are more DominGO! events planned for this summer and information can be found at www.domingohartford.com. Currently the city is working on the exact portions of roads it wants to close off. But whatever the city decides, Freeman Companies will be hard at work ensuring people can attend the event and navigate the area with ease.

In April Freeman Companies was part of a team that was recognized with an Award of Merit by Preservation Connecticut for its work on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus in Hartford.

The award recognizes the work to “demonstrate the many ways historic places contribute to the life and vitality of Connecticut communities,” according to Preservation Connecticut.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Campus opened in 1923 as Weaver High School and became a middle school in 1974. Now, it has been renovated to house the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Middle School as well as the Breakthrough North Magnet School.

JCJ Architecture was the lead on the project and Freeman Companies provided Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering Services, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Oversight Services, and Traffic Engineering Services.

This last award concludes our look back at the first half of the year. There are still many months left is 2022, so who knows what recognitions Freeman Companies will receive.

However, whether we are recognized with awards or not, we undertake every task as if it is the most important one in the world because the greatest award for us is the satisfaction of a job well done.

Freeman Companies was recognized twice during the Connecticut Building Congress’ 26th Annual Project Team Awards.

The company was part of the team that won a Merit Award in the “K-12 (Large)” category for work on the CREC Ana Grace Academy of the Arts in Bloomfield.

According to the CBC, this project created “a cutting-edge 21st century-school that combines Ana Grace Academy of the Arts Elementary School and the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Middle School.”

Friar Associates, Inc. was the lead on the project. Freeman Companies provided Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering Services, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Oversight Services, and Traffic Engineering Services.

Freeman Companies was also part of the team that won first place in the “Civic (Large)” category for the design of the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford’s South End building.

JCJ Architecture was the lead on the project and Freeman Companies provided Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering Services, Environmental Sciences Services, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Oversight Services, and Traffic Engineering Services. Freeman Companies also provided Due Diligence and Site Selection Services on the project.
According to the CBC, The Boys & Girls Club of Hartford (B&GC) South End, which opened in September 2021, is the culmination of a high degree of collaboration and problem-solving between the City of Hartford, Hartford Public Schools, the B&GC, and the entire design and construction team.

“Due largely to the relentless teamwork among all the project team members, the $21-million, 32,000 square-foot facility opened within schedule and budget parameters despite encountering numerous challenges along the way,” the CBC said.

So often we drive, or walk, over a bridge without thinking about how much work goes into safely getting us from point A to point B. We are able to take these trips without worry because engineering firms like Freeman Companies have poured hours of thought and design into the safety, longevity, and functionality of the bridge.
All that paid off in March, when The National Steel Bridge Alliance named the I-91 Interchange 29 Exit Ramp Flyover Bridge in Hartford, also known as the Charter Oak Bridge, the 2022 Bridge of the Year.
This is the first year this award has ever been handed out.
Clough, Harbour & Associates, LLP was the lead on the project. Freeman Companies provided geotechnical engineering services.
The bridge features a triple I-girder straddle bent that provides load path redundancy, eliminating fracture-critical designations and the associated long-term inspection costs – a design that the NSBA called “a highly innovative and very effective solution."
NSBA Senior Director of Market Development Jeff Carlson praised the design of the bridge for having long-term impacts on how bridges are constructed in the future.
"The I-91 Interchange 29 Exit Ramp Flyover Bridge marks the beginning of a new approach to eliminating fracture critical elements by providing load path redundancy--one that has already made an impact beyond Connecticut's borders," Carlson said.

With the year half over, Freeman Companies would like to look back at the recognitions it has received during the first 6 month of 2022.
Over the next few days we will highlight recognitions we received, from the best bridge in the nation to an award of merit for the reconstruction of a middle school.
So please keep checking back and celebrate with us.

This year Freeman Companies paid tribute to our city by celebrating the holidays close to home. The Bushnell Park Carousel is a vintage Stein and Goldstein carousel, first carved in 1914 and was the venue for our 2019 Holiday Party. Ever since its arrival in Hartford in 1974, it has stood in Bushnell Park and has become an iconic symbol of the city. Our party was truly special as we were able to celebrate our team, our partners, our friends and our city in such a fun and unique way. The unlimited carousel rides were a real treat and were perfectly complemented by the always-delicious catering from Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ. It was a night full of laughter and cheer as carousel music played in the background!

Rohan recently spoke at Outward Bound’s 2018 National Benefit Dinner. Outward Bound is the premier provider of experience-based outdoor leadership programs for youth and adults.

Accompanied with a slideshow of photos Rohan took himself while on his expeditions, he spoke of his journeys across the world as he conquered all seven summits, the highest peaks of each continent. Through his philosophy of “Living an Outward Bound Life,” he shared tales of his life from being a young boy in Jamaica to becoming one of the world’s premier mountaineers and endurance athletes. With every ascent and every mile informed by uncommon insights, Rohan’s experience helps us to identify our own metaphorical “Everest” and to conquer it, ringing true to the values of Outward Bound.

Outward Bound’s mission is to "change lives through challenge and discovery. While perhaps ambitious and bold, our vision is a more resilient and compassionate world, with more resilient and compassionate citizens."

Rohan currently serves on the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman.
