WOW, What an incredible day! Despite not being able to hold the festival in person, the 2021 Meistersinger honor choir was still held in a virtual format. 8 of Harlan Community’s finest choral musicians took part in this festival. Sessions were held with interactive online formats featuring world renowned composers Andre Thomas and Eric Whitacre, and British vocal group, VOCES8. Congrats to Wartburg College on hosting a successful festival despite the current COVID-19 mitigations. So proud of these students!

9-12 Band and Vocal recorded their sets last night and sounded wonderful! Looking forward to hearing 6-8 next Monday. This is going to be an awesome way to celebrate the holidays! More details to come on premiere date and time.

Good morning music lovers 🎼

A quick reminder about the virtual High School & Middle School band and chorus concert from director Ryan Meyer.

“I want to inform you that the 7/8 Band and 6th Grade Band will be recording their portions of our 6-12 music showcase next Monday, December 14 during class time. Our music faculty is working collaboratively with HMU and FMCTC to provide a quality virtual performance opportunity for our students that will showcase their hard work from the past nine weeks. We are grateful to FMCTC and HMU for volunteering their time and talents to help us put together a performance we can be proud of.

The performance will be aired and streamed one time on the HMU, FMCTC cable channels and FMCTC's The Zone website on a specific date during the week of December 21. As soon as we have a specific date and time, we will email it out and make sure it is promoted on school social media accounts. It is our hope that this provides the community members and the families of our students a safe way to hear all of the great things they have been doing so far this year.”

Thinking of these fine individuals during this “would have been” All-State weekend. Though there is no festival this year, we are still very proud of them for their hard work and dedication and would like to recognize them again today.

Virtual all-state auditions this year. All-state music is one of the toughest audition processes there is. HCHS has been well represented every year for both vocal and instrumental.

Wishing these HCHS students well and best of luck!

Full article that appears in the NA this week.

By Bob Bjoin, Managing Editor
HARLAN – Nine Harlan Community High School students are recording videos to submit for all-state music consideration this week, a change in the process in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Band members Eric Torneton, trumpet; Devin Kearney, trumpet; Hannah Bissen, flute; Seth Anderson, euphonium; and Ian Kearney, trumpet; and vocalists Kylie Albertsen, Rebekah Bruck, Kaiden Milliken and Madison Schumacher are auditioning this year for the all-state band or orchestra, and the all-state choir.
The joint boards of the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association met in early October to discuss the future of the all-state festival. The board voted to cancel the 2020 event rehearsals and concerts in Ames.
All-state festival auditions are proceeding as planned, and students will be accepted and announced as members of the 2020 All-State Band, Chorus and Orchestra.
The All-State Chorus will revert back to its full 600 members.
Students accepted will be issued the traditional all-state medal, certificate and bumper sticker set.
“All state auditions are being held virtually with video auditions (this year),” said HCHS Band Director Bill Kearney. Student musicians have been in the process of taping their audition pieces for submission by this weekend.
Iowa’s All-State Music Festival traditionally is held in late November. This year was originally scheduled for November 19-21 before being canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic safety considerations. Being selected for all-state music honors is one of the highest achievements for a high school musician.
Watch the Harlan Newspapers for results from the auditions.

In lieu of our annual Spring Vocal Concert and Senior night, Harlan Community Choirs would like to individually recognize these fine seniors on a job well done acting as leaders, role-models, and for paving the way to success for many classes to come.

Seniors: Thank you for setting the bar high for my expectations of what a solid senior class should look like. Our already short time together was cut even shorter due to the pandemic and I wish we could all be back in the same room together to sing at least one more time. Thank you for your support and for welcoming me into your community this year. I will miss you all a ton! Best of luck in your future endeavors.

Wartburg Choir Home Concert (Mar. 17, 2020)

The Wartburg choir pulling together an impromptu final “concert” before having to be sent home for the year due to COVID-19 concerns. For many students, this is the last time they will sing with the ensemble for this year and for some, the last time ever. A very emotional video, yet their performance is still so transformative and powerful. Music like this has the power to heal and change lives! I encourage you all to give this a listen. Thank you, Wartburg Choir.

We’re incredibly proud of the 5-8th grade choir students who took part in the Southwest Iowa Choral Directors Association Honor Choir last Tuesday at Underwood HS. The sound they produced after a single day of rehearsal was just unbelievable!! There are great things happening in the HCSD music department!
