Hanahan Plumbing Company

We're a small, local, licensed plumbing and mechanical company. We provide plumbing, gas, drain cleaning, water heater and electrical repairs to Hanahan, SC and the surrounding Lowcountry area.

Operating as usual

Clogged sewer line? Just some friendly advice to help you save some money before you call a plumber. If you have a tap clean out at your property line, remove the plug and see if it’s full. If the line is clogged here, you can call the county sewer authority and they’ll come out for free since the problem is in their line. Always know where your water shut off valve, gas shut off valve and sewer clean outs are located in the event of a plumbing emergency.

Just a friendly request. If you have a sink clog please don’t pour liquid clog removers in there. Liquid drain openers are bad for the sink, drain pipe, skin, eyes and lungs. Liquid clog removers rarely solve the problem. Please be courteous to your plumber and avoid using chemicals because these chemicals are bad for our health and safety.

Planning to buy an older home? We recommend having a camera inspection of the sewer line before you buy. Clogged sewer lines seem to be the most common problem for recently purchased homes. You could save yourself $ thousands by finding sewer problems before you buy.

Do you hate Robocalls as much as we do?

This week we will begin using a Virtual Phone Assistant to help eliminate robocalls. All you have to do is press the number spoken to you and you will be connected to one of us, a live Hanahan Plumbing Co employee.

We love talking to our customers and we apologize for this inconvenience but we have been bombarded with robocalls and junk calls for far too long. Communicating with our customers is our priority so we hope you understand this change and won't mind pushing a button to connect with us.

Please note if we are on the line with a customer during normal business hours you may be sent to our voicemail so please leave a message and we will get right back to you. If you call outside of normal business hours we are always available to help our well established customers with emergencies just listen for the key to push.

Don’t forget to stream hot and cold water from your faucets the next couple of long freezing nights. A steady stream just stronger than a drip will keep pipes and external water heaters from freezing.

Never a dull day as a plumber. It's a good idea to have a ground level sewer clean-out at your home and at the county tap. If you don't have clean-outs we highly recommend installing them to save yourself some money the next time your sewer line clogs. If the sewer is clogged at the county's tap you can call them to take care of the problem for free.

What’s the last thing a plumber wants to do after a long day at work? Coming home to do more plumbing work.

Contrary to what the box says, flushable wipes ARE NOT safe to flush down your toilet. Please keep these out of your toilet because they clog sewer lines and cause problems for sewer authority pump stations. Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed down your toilet.

If you attempt to change the shower valve cartridge yourself please be careful not to break the old cartridge off in the valve. Trying to dig the remnants of the cartridge out can scratch the brass interior resulting in a full valve replacement. Also make sure you use the proper size hex wrenches because stripping the handle screw can also lead to a more costly repair. If you aren't 100% sure how to replace a cartridge, we recommend calling a plumber to do the job.

How do you prevent excessive wear and tear on your dishwasher? Cleaning your plate helps.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours. We hope you have a fun, relaxing and safe holiday. Our office is closed until Monday November 29 but we are on call to provide emergency service to our well established customers. Thank you for being a valued customer and we hope your holiday weekend is problem free - at least plumbing problem free!

If you're tired of breaking the bank for peanut oil to fry your Thanksgiving turkey, try an oiless fryer. We were skeptical the first time we tried it but the Thanksgiving Day bird tasted amazing. All you need is a good injection recipe and a tasty outer rub.

Some mornings when the clock goes off and I have wake up to put my Plumber Pants on.... I wish I was a cat living the life of luxury.

Hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween. What a treat a win would be for Braves fans tonight.

Spiders are creepy and scary to most of us, especially around Halloween. Wolf Spiders are not poisonous and they actually help keep the annoying insect population down. Hopefully you can overlook these creepy crawlies and let them continue their fine work.

We don't mind getting dirty to fix a plumbing problem. Water leaks, sewer clogs and gas leaks are just a few of the problems we can solve for you.

Why do plumbers always leave the water heater thermostat at 120 degrees? To keep our customers safe. If you read any water heater manual it will tell you that first degree burns can be caused by 140℉ in 3 seconds and 130℉ in 20 seconds but at 120℉ it takes about 8 minutes.

The key word in the phrase "gas safety test" is safety. Please know that when you call Hanahan Plumbing Co for a gas safety test we don't just pump the lines up to 10psi and hope they will hold pressure. We have to make sure your gas system is safe and meets all the codes designed to keep your health and your property safe. Also, a gas safety test is not a substitution for a gas permit if any gas related work has been performed. Hanahan Plumbing Co will only obtain a gas permit for work we physically perform. Allowing unlicensed individuals to perform gas work under a licensed company's permit is illegal.

For real? We're plumbers not herpotologists! We prefer handling drain snakes, not live snakes! Especially when they're sunning beside the steps to our house. Even though it's fall our beautiful Lowcountry still produces perfect weather for baby cottonmouths to enjoy the sun. Careful where you step!

What a sight to walk up on at night.

This might be the oldest water heater we’ve ever replaced. Installed in 1987 which makes it approximately 34 years old. No idea how it lasted so long. Most tank style water heaters we replace are between 6-10 years old.

Ida Update

I was in high school in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo came through the Charleston Area. It wasn’t fun. Hoping everyone in the path of Hurricane Ida stays safe during and after the storm.

And here we are practicing our archeology skills. Uncovering the history of this bathroom’s color.

Wherever there’s a pond….

They say sewage doesn’t flow uphill BUT that’s not completely true. If you need to defy gravity a sewage grinder pump is the way to go.

Another hazard of being a plumber in a crawl space. Not really sure what they were trying to nail but they missed. But they sure don’t feel good when your back, head or legs hit them!

Who says being a plumber is boring? One of the hazards you might run into in a crawl space. A 6’ long snake skin. At least it’s only the skin.

Anyone missing a portable toilet? Crazy how things end up in the creek. This one is behind Yeamans Hall Country Club. Any good ideas how to get this out of there?

Keep your eyes open for thieves who want your plumbing, HVAC and even electrical copper. Scrap brass and copper prices are at record highs. When scrap brass and copper prices reach record prices BAD things usually follow. Be on the lookout for people trying to steal items you may have around and under your house. Backflow prevention assemblies, tankless water heaters, HVAC units and copper piping in your crawl space are all targets of thieves. Sometimes they’re even brave or dumb enough to try to steal your main electrical cable if it’s in your crawl space. We hope this doesn’t happen to anyone but we’ve seen it and it’s happening now. So please be vigilant and if it happens to you report it to the police because most scrap yards don’t ask where the copper comes from when a person brings it in!

We offer Annual Tankless Water Heater Service for $125. This service makes you a Loyalty Customer. Our Loyalty Customers get prioroty service and qualify for money saving discounts.

We love trees and big oaks are our favorite. The roots can cause major damage to water and sewer lines. Big oak roots cracked this pipe at the fitting. Don't stop planting trees but we highly recommend planting them away from water and sewer lines if possible.

This June we are supporting Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness for Wade Dyson who passed in 2017 and the many other amazing people we know who have battled this disease and the many still battling. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones. We know there are many great causes deserving of your donations but if you have a few extra dollars you can spare to help find a cure for this disease we urge you to donate. Every day more people are being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and a cure can’t come soon enough. If you haven’t been affected by this disease first hand please take some time to learn a little bit about it. The National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) are two great sources for information. We know people have different thoughts about the Alzheimer’s Association but we donate to them because they raise and give more money to Alzheimer’s research than any other organization. June is the Alzheimer’s Association’s Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month so we hope you’ll join us in the fight against Alzheimer’s by donating to find a cure.

Older homes are great. I personally believe they were built much better than today's homes. But sometimes you do have to upgrade things in an old home. Some older tub valves are no longer worth rebuilding with new parts so we'll only give you a price to replace the entire valve. The main problem is you're trying to put a new stem with new threads into a 50 plus year old valve with 50 year old threads - they just don't line up very well. So if you hear us tell you that we won't swap out the parts it's because we don't want to charge you over $100 for parts that we know won't work the way you expect them to work.
