Are things beginning to bloom in Lendonwood Gardens?
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday, August 26 at the entrance of Lendonwood Gardens. The construction prep is beginning on a new Welcome Center building at the front gate, with completion expected in about six months. Visitors to the gardens next year will be entering through a new, more welcoming front entrance which was made public in an announcement by board president Jim Corbridge earlier in the summer. The building project is being coordinated by a board committee led by vice-president Jim Reynolds who will work closely with the contractor to complete the facility.
The new building will be constructed primarily from the proceeds of an insurance settlement after the fire loss of the garden’s rental house on the property last year.
“After the fire, the board concluded that our mission really does not include being landlords of a rental home, so instead of rebuilding a residence, we started looking at our priority needs,” Corbridge said. Among the key needs identified at the time was to create a place where trained volunteers could greet visitors, provide information, answer questions, accept admission fees, sell plants, and staff a gift shop, he said.
“Our current resources likely will not cover all the costs of the new Welcome Center, other improvements, and an operational budget shortfall caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said. “We will need to seek increased contributions from supporters in the community, as well as investigating grant possibilities. “
The new building will measure 42 feet by 22.5 feet, not counting the deck, and will include the space for ticket sales, a gift shop, restrooms, storage, and a small meeting room. He said the style of the facility will be consistent with the garden’s Pavilion at the Koi Pond.
As part of the construction project, the old gatehouse will be demolished, along with part of the front fence to accommodate the new building. Many plants and small trees already have been relocated, although a few larger trees had to be cleared.
Corbridge said that plans for the new Welcome Center depend heavily on recruiting interested volunteers to staff the facility. “We are always in need of volunteers to care for the garden itself, but now we hope community members will step forward to help us greet visitors and attend to their needs.” He pointed out that the new building will be air conditioned.
The privately owned garden is open to the public year round, from dawn to dusk. Botanical highlights include large collections of azaleas, rhododendrons, daylilies, hostas, peonies, Japanese maples, dogwoods, and many other plants and trees.
Lendonwood also has become a popular site for weddings and other special events. For more information about Lendonwood, see the garden’s web site at www.lendonwood.com or call 918-786-2938.

Pictured at the groundbreaking ceremony - Cindy Reynolds, Jim Reynolds, Jim Corbridge, Ray Geis, Michele Norwood, Pastor Robert Carter, Pauline Hale, Judy Scarriot, and Shirley Daggett. Also attending were Connie King, Grove Area Chamber of Commerce; Arizona Smith, The American; and Jim Ellis, The Grove Sun.

An eight-acre Oklahoma Botanical Garden located near Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma. http://www.lendonwood.com Lendonwood Gardens was founded in 1995 by Dr. Leonard Miller, a retired dentist in Grove, who designed and built the botanical garden that now attracts numerous visitors each year.

Dr. Miller's interest in Japanese gardening and horticulture resulted in a unique blend of American and Asian gardening cultures at Lendonwood. The major plantings took about 18 months to complete, but significant numbers of plants are added each year as the Gardens evolve. The Gardens became a non-profit corporation, Lendonwood Gardens, Inc., in January 1997, when Dr. Miller donated the property for operation by the corporation.

I dropped my Lendonwood Gardens in Grove today, between spring showers. It was great to see all the flowers and plants washed by the rains. In fact the garden was maybe as green as I have ever seen it, and the water in the pond was unusually clear. With balmy sunshine forecast for this Saturday, it should be a marvelous day for "Art in the Garden" this weekend. I hear there will be all sorts of booths, music, Plein Aire painting etc. Sounds like Lendonwood will definitely be the … See more

Yippee! Break out the champagne...or something! The fourth of four Monarch butterflies today emerged from its chrysalis. We had almost given up on this last one; kept checking day by day. But at noon today the chrysalis was showing some orange (see photo) and two hours later, the magic happened! In these pics, the Monarch is drying its wings before leaving its "neo-natal unit". Remains of its chrysalis can be seen on the left. Imagine that big butterfly all scrunched inside! Couldn't wait to share the news with the generous donor who drove three hours to leave the four chrysalises to emerge at Lendonwood.

It's beginning to look a lot like...CHRISTMAS AT LENDONWOOD! Drop by the Welcome Center gift shop for holiday decor and that special gift! Lendonwood is proud to support the Downtown Grove Beautification Project now underway at key intersections downtown. More than 400 plants have already been planted in a dozen large flower beds, with more to come. Lendonwood donated some of the plants for the project and several of our hard-working volunteers joined in the effort. The project is a collaboration of the City of Grove, Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, Lendonwood, and the Grove Garden Club. Check out the "new look" downtown!

In only a few days, one of our "adopted" Monarch chrysalises was transformed into a beautiful butterfly! See the transformation below from green cocoonlike chrysalis, to darkened form, to colorful butterfly. Our benefactor, Beverly House of near Wichita, transported four chrysalises three hours to Lendonwood, where we still have nectar plants blooming for the butterflies' sustenance before they head to Mexico. Beverly chose Lendonwood because she saw that we had a Monarch Waystation as a temporary home for her charges! Thank you, Beverly!

10/21/2021

One of our "adopted" Monarch chrysalises is turning dark; a sign that a butterfly soon will emerge! Early stage of another chrysalis is shown in the background, with bright green coloring. These guys (or gals) better hurry up and emerge and stoke up for their journey to Mexico! Exciting to watch! Lendonwood's Monarch Waystation has inspired many of us to learn more about this threatened butterfly's lifecycle.

Photos from Lendonwood Gardens's post 10/12/2021

We don't know many people who would drive three hours to bring four Monarch butterfly chrysalises to a safe environment, but Beverly House of Belle Plaine, Kansas, is passionate about the threatened butterfly! On Sunday, she brought the cocoon-like chrysalises in a mesh box to Lendonwood, so that when they morphed into butterflies they would have plenty of nectar plants nearby. They even survived the Sunday night thunderstorm!

Lendonwood's Welcome Center has plants for sale on the back patio. Included are some nice Japanese Maples! At our recent plant sale, we sold out of the Japanese Maples within two hours -- leaving many people disappointed. Well, we now have some for sale! Come check them out! Also on the new sale rack right now are basil plants, Red Bud trees, Oxalis ("purple shamrocks"). Other plants are for sale on the old sale rack behind the Oklahoma Garden, including beautiful irises, daylilies, nandina, and more!

Grove Rotarian Art Kopp and his wife, Nancy, had a few hours to spare and volunteered for a "mini-workday" at Lendonwood this week. They gave the wedding gazebo a fresh coat of paint -- and Art's hands offer up the evidence! If you'd like to take on a fall project at the garden for a few hours at your convenience, let us know! Thanks to all the volunteers -- Rotarians and otherwise -- who help make Lendonwood possible.

Wander around the Gardens and you're sure to find something beautiful, interesting or even a little scary (well, only if you don't like caterpillars)! Fall foliage on the Japanese maples is starting to show the colors. By the way, if you have a couple of hours to help "Put the Garden to Bed," let us know -- we can use all the help we can get! Enjoy!

For what it's worth, my best estimate of peak Lendonwood fall foliage would be some time in the week starting with this coming Sunday. These photos were taken 2 days ago, and show things just getting started. However, for a photographer, at Lendonwood, there is always something to see. Enjoy, RC
