If you don't have any set plans for Saturday afternoon, then make the short drive to good ole Porter, Ok. There will be a BBQ cook-off with the judging at 5pm and immediately the beginning of $10 plate sales to sample all of the cooking. There will be a a music concert featuring local talent Nathan Kilgore. Come on out for good food and good music.
All proceeds go to support the Portor Volunteer Fire Dept.
WHO IS INTERESTED IN SMOKED RIBS FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND?
Randal will be smoking ribs this Saturday the 4th. Will doing St. Louis style. Comment here or message if you are interested in purchasing a rack or more. He should have them completed around 2 or 3 pm wrapped up for pickup. They will ready to eat then or can kept cold and heated up for your Labor day family get togethers. You can also contact Randal by calling or texting. Please let him know by 10pm Friday for enough preparation time.
Well the 1st competition of the KCBS backyard series is under the belt. The chicken was 3rd place overall and the ribs did not place in the top 5.
I did learn and will use to improve. On the chicken I was dinged for appearance and I think it was for the top right thigh not uniform. On the ribs I was dinged for taste and tenderness, appearance was good. I judges comment card was salty and when I tasted them I agreed. After talking with a couple of experienced teams I learnt to keep doing the same and expect different results due to different judges, different tastes.

These we the 1st ever turn in boxes for me in a competition. Place 3rd in the chicken, and didn't place in the top 5 of the ribs. I learnt that judges have different thoughts, lol, all said appearance was good, some said taste and tenderness was good but a couple of judges said taste was salty. Good learning experience for the next one. Some experienced teams said do the same thing next time and get different results.
